Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuxi Liu.
Hi Yuxi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a multidisciplinary designer and award-winning visual artist based in New York. I was born into an ordinary merchant family in 1994. Since childhood, I have been a relatively quiet child, good at thinking and observation. My talent for painting began to emerge when I was five years old. I began to learn painting professionally with my painting Enlightenment teacher. In my childhood, what accompanied me most were pencils and colors. I placed my feelings and words in the painting and enjoyed the freedom and happiness that painting brought me.
I left my family to begin my undergraduate studies in graphic design at the SVA in New York. A completely unfamiliar environment and culture brought me a different mental experience. Recalling the first three years of my life in New York, my memory is filled with busyness and learning. I enjoy the fullness of the moment and the days surrounded by art. I love the diverse culture in New York, and everything around me brings me endless creative inspiration. I continued my master’s studies in Brooklyn, NY. During these six years of study and design, I fell madly in love with design and art.
After graduating, I got my first full-time job in a design agency in New York. My works focus on the fields of visual identity, UI/UX, product and packaging design, and environmental graphic design. I always seek innovative approaches to convey values and messages through the power of design.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My design life seems like a process of breaking through and an exploratory journey to me. The birth of good design work is just like life, which involves repeated failures, self-struggle, and re-starts. Failure is frustrating and painful, but it is also the premise of success. When I was a young visual artist, I focused on the aesthetics and artistic effects of the design but ignored the functionality and rationality of the design, which leads to a lack of logic and depth in my works. I began to read the autobiographies of some artists and research the design experiences of some famous designers. Dieter Rams’s 10 good design principles have had the greatest impact on me. I realized that a good designer should be comprehensive, and good work should really solve the problem. Functional, innovative, and aesthetic all three are indispensable elements of a good design. According to this methodology, my design process is more directional and valuable. Now I am an experienced designer. That is still an unforgettable experience for me. It was also a turning point in my design career.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a visual communication designer based in NYC with five years of design experience. I have worked in various fields of design ranging from graphic design, digital design, product and packaging design, environmental graphic design, etc. I aim to transform everyday objects into moments of delight through a unified approach combining strategy, design, and art direction. Dieter Rams’s 10 good design principles had a great influence on me. I believe that design should be made with functionality, rationality, and aesthetics. My works have won multiple international visual arts and design awards, including the A’Design Award, GDUSA, Summit Emerging Media Award, and Indigo Design Award. I exhibited my artwork around the world, including in the U.S., Europe, and China.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My design career has been hard but lucky. Because in every stage of my life, I have had an advocate by my side. Since childhood, my family has always supported my artistic dream. Until I left my family to study alone in New York, my friends and my partner gave me unlimited support, and they always gave me serious comments and suggestions about my work which helps me a lot. After I graduated, I started my job and met a very professional leader who appreciated me very much and gave me many good opportunities. Under his leadership, I completed many excellent works and have grown up a lot. Recalling my design career, I feel very contented and grateful to everyone who gave me support.
