Today we’d like to introduce you to Yujia Wang.
Hi Yujia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In the last ten years, I was trained as a professional designer, photographer, and videographer. I mainly work with a focus on fashion and product photography. My work is inspired by creating a balance between aesthetic quality and usability. I am open to a dynamic range of work related to my skills, such as design, storytelling, and film.
I got my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Design in 2008-2015. After that, I applied for the Communication Studies Ph.D. program at Zhejiang University, one of the top three universities in China. There, I met my Ohio University professors. They reviewed my portfolio during a conference and offered me the opportunity to study at O.U. School of Visual Communication (VisCom) with a full scholarship. This allowed me to focus my studies on Photography and Film.
I see light, colors, graphics, and motions in every moment that ignites my creative passion. I am a perfectionist that takes pride in my acute attention to detail. As someone who has worked in stills, motion, web, and multimedia production, I offer a comprehensive understanding of the full-scale production process.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was a designer before I become a professional commercial photographer which means I don’t have any knowledge of photography at the very beginning of my grad school. It normally took me an entire night to review the papers and books to get prepared for the exams. I clearly remember that I used a whole summer break to read books and watch video tutorials over 8-10 hours every day. There’s even more to learn after I started video & Film. So be prepared to learn if you want to become a photo/video creative professional.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work and developed relations with multiple brands in the past. Learning to get premium clients is really important to people who work in this industry. As a freelancer, the biggest challenge is to charge the client the right price and grow the business into a consistent business partten. My communication studies background and my multi-skillset sets me apart from other photographers and artists. I can easily detect the clients’ needs and vibe with their desired athletic standards, which has been very helpful for my business.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
For a photographer, I don’t think there are a lot of risks unless you always try to put you of someone’s life in danger when you shoot. But there s always a big struggle of purchasing gear. You can be risky and aggressive. But I am always very conservative on this point. There is a balance of good equipment and good work. Buying too much equipment sounds risky to the business in my opinion. You don’t need the best equipment to make the best piece of work. I try to tell all my friends who reach out to ask for gear advice. There is a difference between loving photography and loving cameras & lens. Decide you want to become an artist or sales manager first.
