Today we’d like to introduce you to Yiran Zhou
Hi Yiran , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, my name is Yiran Zhou. I’m an innovative fashion designer and digital artist. Right now, I’m focused on creating phy-gital fashion designs, where I delve into the concept of digital twins in the fashion world. My fascination with digital twins probably stems from my own experience as an identical twin. Growing up, my sister and I were inseparable, and as I got older, I started to reflect on our relationship over the years. This reflection has influenced my work, leading me to consistently create pieces in pairs since I began my practice.
For me, being a twin means that while my sister and I are two distinct individuals, people often see us as a unit when we’re together. It’s like we’re the same essence expressed in different forms under different circumstances.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As we all know, the fashion industry is incredibly competitive, with everyone constantly pushed to keep moving forward. Driven by my bigger ambitions in fashion and art, I made the difficult decision to leave my family and home in Melbourne, Australia, and move to London. When I first arrived, I felt completely lost—it was like there was something new happening every second. But over time, I realized that the fashion and art worlds aren’t just about honing your skills; they’re much more about discovering who you are as an artist and truly understanding yourself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m focusing on integrating innovative technology into the fashion industry. Currently, I’m working on creating phy-gital fashion and building digital archives for the industry. My aim is to bring clothing into the virtual world, crafting different backgrounds and characters to open up new possibilities and ensure that iconic fashion pieces can live on in the digital realm.
I’m known for my unique aesthetic style. My garment designs, character creations, and scene settings all have a strong gothic and dark aesthetic, which I believe has become my iconic design signature.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
People are naturally drawn to you if you have great work to show. That’s why I always focus on honing my skills first and creating impressive work. This way, I feel more confident when it comes to networking.
