Check Out Yagiz Oral’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yagiz Oral.

Hi Yagiz, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a film composer and orchestra conductor. Actually, I can say that my musical journey started a little later than my colleagues. I started playing the electric guitar when I was in high school. That’s when I started to express myself with music and put music at the center of my life. After gaining a lot of concert and recording experience with guitar, I joined a choir and was introduced to polyphonic music for the first time. From that point on, I wanted to be a much bigger part of the music. Since my childhood, movies and their music have deeply influenced me. That’s when I first realized that I could compose film music. I realized that I get goosebumps every time I watch a movie or see a movie scene taken to another dimension with the music itself. This energy is still the biggest motivation for my film composition. On the other hand, my conducting story is a little different. While I was trying to explore different areas of music, I went to my conducting teacher to experience and learn conducting as well as composition. However, I was found inadequate to learn this area and was kicked out of the room. However, rather than pushing me away from being a conductor, this exclusion brought me even more ambitiously towards it. Then, with a collective consciousness, I formed a symphony orchestra to learn by doing the work by gaining experience on stage. Since then, I remember this collective approach every time I go on stage to conduct.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, I developed myself rather than being educated in both areas I mentioned. Every process you develop yourself is a journey in itself and this journey is quite tiring, to be honest. The times I faced the most difficulties on this journey were the difficulties while preparing for concerts with the orchestra. Of course, it is not easy to work with 50-60 people and to create an organic sound. In addition to the difficulty of the work you do and the sound you will create, it can be difficult from time to time to control your dialogue with the people you work with. Especially if you are conducting an orchestra, which is one of the professions where you need authority the most, every gesture and movement you reflect on the stage becomes very important. However, over time I managed to control these movements and facial expressions and become more comfortable and constructive both in rehearsal and on stage.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In fact, I am mostly known for the effect of the music I composed on people. Without a doubt, this is an invaluable form of recognition for a composer. Apart from conducting, my main profession is film music composer. So movies and their music mean everything to my field of work. When I am going to compose a piece of music for a film, I always approach it with a natural impulse that comes from within me. With the feeling that a scene creates in me, it causes me to improvise something at that moment. This allows me to come up with something that is completely my own.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Especially when I write music for movies, everyone thinks that I am in my own comfort zone and that I compose without stress. But actually, every project is a source of stress for me at first. As I spend time with the project, this stress is easily resolved and replaced by the music I wrote. However, I get nervous in every project.
