Check Out Xiaoyu (Littletoe) Xue’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiaoyu (Littletoe) Xue.

Hi Xiaoyu (Littletoe), so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I dropped out of my college in China and went to the School of Visual Arts to start my design career around eight years ago and I have no regrets. Studying at SVA is challenging because I’ve never been an art student at school, especially you are an English as a second language international student, but I’ve always like design and art, and I spent more time to invest in my work, the result is great, during school, I won Yound One’s silver cube awards and SVA alumni scholarship awards; also I got hired as a freelance designer at Sunday Afternoon studio before graduation, I would say I’m really grateful to be who I am today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is not smooth at all, at the first semester at school, I can’t really understand what my classmate and teacher say, and I needed to start from zero to learn art and practice art making, so I need to pay extra 100% attention to learn as much as I can when I was in design classes at sophomore, motion graphic interests me a lot, but it also requires ton’s of effort to learn new skills which I did. After graduating the school challenge becomes the real-world challenge, I will need to learn how to present my work to clients and how to communicate and the team works with my colleagues and my bosses.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multidisciplinary designer does visual designs like Motion Graphics, Branding, and Illustration. I specialize in 3D and 2D in design and motion, not all my works are single media but I would say they are mostly digital-based. I’m really proud of my second project at Sunday afternoon won Graphis Silver Award; it’s a Case Study for Liquid+Arcade, the case study is not a usual design company’s case study, it includes 3D scenes and motions which stand out among other companies general projects. What sets me apart from others is the ability to accomplish different tasks with different techniques with also a keen eye for designs, I think that will distinguish my value in my career.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Always learning, keep on track of what’s going on in the world, don’t focus on design information only, and don’t hesitate to ask people questions.
