Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiangwu Xie.
Hi Xiangwu, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Xiangwu Xie, a bi-cultural film producer and artist passionate about storytelling. I have experience across different industries. My work ranges from theatre drama to filmmaking. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts from Shenyang Conservatory of Music, Liaoning, China. With enthusiasm for filmmaking, I went to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Atlanta to achieve a master’s degree in film and television. The acting experience gives me a precise vision of directing actors in my works. I have directed and produced dozens of short films, commercials, and music videos over the past few years.
As a producer, the film I produced, “Wings,” has been nominated for Cannes World Film Festival and entered finalist in Flicker’s Rhode Island International Film Festival, NewFilmmakers NY Film Festival, and Student Los Angeles Film Awards.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m an introverted person. I know everyone who mentions the producer thinks their personality should be extroverted. But I can’t change my personality. So I doubted myself at first. But as time passed and more and more experience I got, I found that the most important thing is sincerity. You will receive kindness if you treat anyone with your heart.
Because of this principle, I meet filmmakers who have the same thoughts as me, which helps me to stay in Los Angeles to pursue my dream.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Now, I’m running a film production studio named Unreal Imagine in Los Angeles. We offer Chinese and English full-service for commercial, short, sizzle reel, and music video production. Also, we have 6000 sqft space that has different set up (hospital, bedroom, office, white cyc). You are welcome to search “Unreal Imagine” on Google Maps and visit us anytime.
We have finished some commercials and mini-series recently, like a short website banner video we produced for AMZ, which is a new company with unlimited potential. They want to elaborate their poetic concept in a 10s video. Our team implemented the abstract concept into the image and ended up saving costs by shooting the multi-site scenery with a green screen.
Our strength is that we have a full team, from pre-production and shooting to post-production editing and visual effects. We offer our clients the highest quality at the lowest price so that every budget is used to the fullest. Los Angeles has a huge Chinese community but no professional film production company. As the first Chinese language production company in Los Angeles, we can best understand the needs of our clients.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I started my film career when I entered my graduate university — SCAD. I met great friends, professors, and colleagues there. When I was finishing my master’s degree, I learned the film production experience and how you maintain relationships with people. When I first came to the United States, I had no friends. SCAD, as a platform, gives me various ways to meet aluminum working in the industry. Even though I’m in LA now, I always meet the person from SCAD, and we create content together now. It’s an essential beginning of my career.
