Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilfredo Williams.
Hi Wilfredo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started as an Air Force member being stationed at Edwards AFB around 2003. Learning the California seeing where I can get my talents heard as well begin the recording. Over time, I decided to pass out a free mixtape that eventually got in the hands of a promoter that knew a few people. While that was happening, I found a booking promoter in West Hollywood that did th sell tickets and perform on stage so after years of doing that, the name started to spread around LA county and city limits.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was one of the most challenging obstacles having that work/life balance. Around 2007, after coming home from deployment, I got out the military after 9 years serving honorably, became homeless for a few months. Sleeping in my 2 door Honda not letting friends know what my situation was. I knew I couldn’t allow myself to accept this new life and figured I would have to go 10 times as hard.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Hip Hop artist/songwriter that creates sound for picture. Most would consider this part of Sync Licensing, where sound is composed to match film/tv motion picture. Before I was more into wanting to release more album stuff. My first placement came on a Christian Film with Stephen “Bud’da” Anderson back in 2007 where I did a rap for a scene in the movie. Soon after that, through booked live show performances (Sean Healy Presents) in West Hollywood and networking was introduced to my good friend Phillip Lawrence (Bruno Mars) whom pointed me in the direction of Colin Wolfe at Beacon St Studios in Venice. The rest is history.
I then met a music house collective of talented and amazing musicians that changed my whole outlook on what I saw music as. The moment I landed my first commercial placement (Taco Bell) sorta changed my whole trajectory from there. After that my band and I Crown and the M.O.B decided let’s pump out more heat. I’ve also been blessed with the crew to be the House Band for the ESPY Awards 5 years in a row, hosted by ESPN downtown LA. From there I started to see how quick this spreads as more commercial, tv and movie placements started to come in such as (Taco Bell Super Bowl spot, New Amsterdam Vodka, Anchorman 2 soundtrack) and probably my largest placement to date being the infamous Burger King Jingle.
Whole doing so I reconnected with Bud’da and started working on other cool music projects for TV shows such as (Raising Kanan, BMF, Power: Force, The Chi and Swagger.) That’s when I knew this is only going to keep growing with consistency and hard work.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Los Angeles is a true land of opportunity. Coming from the East Coast I wasn’t too fond of being far away from my NYC roots. But Cali gives you this refreshing feeling to feel good about whatever it is you’re doing no matter who’s watching. LA also gives that encouraging “CAN DO” spirit the moment the sun rises. Thoughts and ideas come easier for me here in LA due to its laid back nature.
There isn’t really anything to dislike about this city. Where I come from we adapt to the good and bad of it all or it wouldn’t be an experience.
