Check Out Vy Luu’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vy Luu

Hi Vy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Originally from the Bay Area, I moved down to SoCal 15years ago searching for a change. After working in office settings right after school, I quickly realized it was not a good fit. I wanted to do something more fun and creative versus feeling restricted with business attire all the time.
After moving down to Los Angeles, I decided to explore the make-up industry, I worked in retail for about 10 years for almost every make-up brand. I have had amazing opportunities to travel and work at special events such as Coachella pop up store, Oscar, Emmy, etc. But, deep down, I was still searching for something more fulfilling and enjoyful.
In 2017, I traveled to San Francisco to attend a 2 day in-person microblading class hosted by a very well known academy at the time. The class was big. I felt overwhelmed, unprepared and ended up not finishing the program. It was a disappointment to myself and a big hit to my ego for not achieving my goal. I went back to Los Angeles and continue my daily life working in cosmetic retail.
Flash forward to 2020, my place of employment filed for bankruptcy and closed their doors permanently in March. Then following right after the pandemic. The perfect storm. With the uncertainty of the future and lot of time on my hand, I have decided to reinvent myself and give PMU another try. This time, I promised myself I will spend more time doing my due diligence and more determined to actually finish this goal I have set for myself.
In August of 2020, I have found a great teacher/mentor Tanny Diep who has inspired me to not only finish my microblading class but continue my education, learning more techniques and fully becoming a PMU artist. I joined her team at Swaybrows in March 2021 as a Junior artist, working and learning beside her and still growing as an artist today. I am now a Master Trainer in Microblade&Shade with Beauty Angels Academy. I train new aspiring individuals that hopes to become a PMU artists. All the while, I am still taking clients, creating beautiful permanent makeup arts daily. I could not be happier and feeling more fulfilled with this career choice.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth road? Definitely not.
But end result? Very rewarding.

I am thankful to have decided to give myself another try at PMU after the first unsuccessful attempt. I truly believe that my initial mindset was thinking it would be “easy.” That mindset lead me to being overwhelmed and ultimately putting a pause on this journey of becoming a PMU artist.
It took me a few years after and lot of self reflecting to muster up the courage to attempt PMU again. This time, with a different mindset, determination, and consistency. In realization, it is okay to be great at something right away, and it is totally okay to keep trying and learning to improve as long as you are willing to put in the time, work, and dedication. The goal you set for yourself is not impossible after all.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Permanent Makeup Artist specializing in microblading, powder brows, feather nano, eyeliners, SMP, lip blush, and removal. I am proud to be able to offer a variety of services. What I enjoy creating the most are brows, natural looking eyebrows. I don’t really have or claim any “signature style” of my own. My goal is to always to create something beautiful, realistic, natural looking. More importantly, being versatile by taking a customized approach to each client’s features that makes them uniquely them.
