Check Out Thomas Jacobsen’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Jacobsen.

Hi Thomas, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Moved to LA when I was 20 to work in. Film. Got my first jobs from Craigslist. One of the first was doing set building for a reality show. That lead to a short career as a camera man for a ton of reality shows. It beat my body up. I was part of a film Troup called 5 Second Films (5SF for short) . And at that time youtube was starting to pay creatives and we started getting some commercial gigs. So I left reality to focus on dreams. From there left head first into trying to make a living off my own ideas and passions. We (5SF) grew a pretty big following and we’re able to make a film with the help of Kickstaters. I was lucky enough to co direct that film with my best friends. But the YouTube bubble crashed and money started to dry up, unless you were a single influencer type personality. Which a e definitely were not. So years past and I kept working on small indie projects. Until Covid. I had always loved working with wood and other materials. Getting my hands dirty and expressing myself through a physical medium. So during the lock down I jumped into my garage and started building. Tables, cutting boards, dice trays. Basically anything I needed in my own home. This lead to friends reaching out needing stuff. So I kept building. Today I make everything from small desk top art to tables. I still work in film and have made several miniatures for films and props. I have an army of 3d Printers and design custom pieces in 3d software. I love combining different mediums and leaning into new and old techniques.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Money is always a challenge. Between buying materials and tools to just having money to live and love life.

Other than money this all comes very Naturally to me. My father was a carpenter for 50 years and my mom was a oainter and stain glass artists. So the art part I got. Financial smarts….not so much.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Jack of all trades and proud. I use wood, resin, glass, concrete, foam and a slew of other materials in my art and professional life.

I work on film sets in lighting so that let’s me scratch that film making itch feom time to time.

But a day spent in my workshop( I call the crows nest) is the best and most fulfilling day I could ask for.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
