Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Pircey.
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
During Covid in 2020, a friend encouraged me to invest in a film camera. I enjoyed taking disposables on vacations, so he pushed me to get into an actual film camera and test out my artistic eye. A few road trips later, I was obsessed with this new hobby and loved experimenting with my new camera! Digital photography had never clicked for me – I always saw it as stiff and sterile, too “clean” for my taste. Film enchanted me with all its grain, deep colors, extravagant lighting and whimsical tones. I slowly began photographing people I knew and shortly after was asked to photograph a friend’s backyard elopement. People began to comment on how much they loved my photography style and artistic eye and they would ask me to take their own pictures. This snowballed a year later into biting the bullet and opening an LLC to work on this side hustle. The side hustle became my main focus a year after that in 2022 and today I am shooting weddings, engagements, elopements, maternity, family portraits, editorial shoots, interior design photos, and beyond full-time!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been far from smooth! I’d say the greatest struggle has been with myself and believing in my own eye for beauty. Artists constantly question their work. Impostor syndrome is real and can get to you if you aren’t careful! I doubted my ability, how “good” my work was, and if it would be worth my time to invest so much time and energy into my business. I had no clue if it would even take off or if people would hire me and I went through many months of no paid work at all. I had to embrace the process for myself and learn to trust my own vision for the projects I worked on. I had to learn to make good business decisions and weigh which methods to use in marketing myself, failing many times along the way until the right things stuck and the wrong ones faded out of the picture. I struggled to hope that my business would take off and came close to throwing in the towel more times than I can count. At the end of the day, perseverance and a genuine love for the craft of film photography is what got me through!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an editorial and wedding photographer who specializes in 35mm film format. I am known for my rich colors, golden tones, grainy, whimsical feel, and unique posing, framing and presentation of my subjects. I think outside the box constantly and pull inspiration from the world around me voraciously. I am most proud of the unique perspective my work captures…clients are constantly telling me I capture them in ways that are distinctive and elegant. I am proud of the distinct tone of whimsicality, romance, and adventure my work captures – it makes the photos seem both timeless and tangible as they showcase glimpses of even clothed in full humanity. My work sets me apart from others because it captures the human spirit. I never felt like digital photography captured the hearts of people or places well whereas film holds a very soul-full tone to it that enamors me. My work feels both fresh and new AND very ancient and elegant.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe the industry will shift more to 35mm film over digital in the next 5-10 years because people crave something real. Film is gritty (literally) and there’s a peculiar magic or romanticism to film that is drawing more and more people in. I believe that the relationship between the photographer and the clients will be more important to the final product because human connection is just as important behind the camera as it is in the frame. People want to connect and photography is only enriched by how comfortable the photographer can make people feel.
