Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy McCray.
Hi Tammy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got started in this order exactly, a dream, a divorce, and prayer. From a young age I found great joy in making things with my hands. Jewelry, doll clothing from old socks, drawing etc. I am an only child so growing up I had a lot of time on my hands. My dream was always to go to school and study fashion, but God had other plans for me. The military called me away first, then X-ray school, but never made it to fashion school. Time passed and in 2018 I got married. I had an idea for clothing but it was never taken seriously until I styled myself and started styling my ex husband. The time that we shared came to a an end in 2022. It was a hard time emotionally, but my faith in God and my design and creativity saved me from a deep depression. In 2022 I started Tammy McCray LLC and have been going ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No not at all. Not knowing any of the business side of things and having to learn. The biggest problem we had is being an unknown brand. Learning you could have the best product, but if no knows who you are how to make your presence known especially with the market being flooded. My struggles are my journeys and wouldn’t change them for anything.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a menswear accessories designer specializing in socks. I make beautiful Art socks that you can interchange prints depending on leg position. My socks are thick jacquard knitted with 95% cotton and 5% metallic thread hand picked and ordered at the time bulk order is placed. Being a sock designer is special because you only have a small amount of fabric being woven to design on. Now socks are fashion too and I get a lot of women wearing them as well as men.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Honesty to myself and staying true to the process I have created to produce high quality socks.
