Check Out Ta’lor Floyd’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ta’lor Floyd

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My mother has always been a big fashion influence of mine as I remember her style being so amazing and I often went shopping with her growing up. She definitely kept me fly! While studying Film in college, I had a theater teacher that introduced me to the Costume Shop on campus where I started working and I learned how to cut & sew costumes, do alterations & make patterns. Working in the costume shop inspired me to bring my own designs to life.
I was on my college’s fashion modeling team and for one fashion show they told us to design our own shoe. So I spiked and painted some purple Nike Blazers and posted a picture online and started my fashion entrepreneur business there.

After receiving a BA in Electronic Media & Film, I worked different jobs to find my way. 1st job out of college I worked as a Video Editor for a small film production company based in Virginia. I learned a lot from working there and they took me to California for my first time to work on a film with the company.
I then worked in a few spaces to learn how to sew in different environments, like a textile department for an event planning company where I learned and did upholstery and was sewing pillows and drapes. Simultaneously, I worked part time a Tailor Shop in Washington D.C. where I learned so much more.

In 2018, I moved to LA in hopes to pursue Filmmaking dreams. As that didn’t fall through my first job in LA was at Mood Fabrics, then a Tailor Shop in Hollywood called Denim Revival where I learned so many sewing lessons as I was working under an Armenian woman Tailor with 40+ years of experience. I worked there for 5+ years.

While gaining more sewing experience and having a small sewing set up in my room in Hollywood, I started my brand Mink Tiers! A unisex luxury streetwear brand, handcrafted, cut & sewn by me!

After having my brand for a while, tailoring and sewing for different people in LA, I got an opportunity to be a Wardrobe Assistant for an icon, Gwen Stefani. My mother’s good friend from NY is her main hair stylist and recommended me for the job. I’ve now been with her team for 2.5 years, traveling all over the world, taking care of all wardrobe needs for the team. It’s truly a dream and I feel so happy and blessed to be able to live this life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not the smoothest road, some struggles along the way have been just adjusting to traveling a lot, long wait times for payments, not getting paid a few times from celebs. Adjusting to having a lot of responsibility and running a business by myself!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
