Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Flores.
Hi Sophia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started, like most hairstylists, doing some haircuts in my friend’s/families’ bathrooms, so I was unaware that I could ever do it as a career. I was studying photography at the time and decided to take a haircutting class, and I loved it. For me, it was very important I tried different things so I would know for sure I’m getting into something that I would want to continue for the long run. However, I don’t think I have to do only one thing for the rest of my life. I love to do a lot of creative things outside of hair. Of course, I still want to cut color and style hair until I’m old, but I know that’s not the only thing I have to offer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I know I love doing hair because if I didn’t, I don’t think I wouldn’t have put up with half the things I did. I always find myself questioning which avenues I want to take only because there are so many different routes you can take when you’re a hairstylist/colorist/artist… It’s hard because I love both the salon and freelance on set work, so I don’t choose one or the other, I do both. I’m able to keep busy more often and have endless work. This can also be a struggle when I want to take time for myself and my own personal projects. Sometimes, the salon and on-set environments are very cutthroat, which I respect because that’s why I’m as skilled as I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize and have studied hair color for a few years now. I love to do a full head of baby lights that come out so seamless and natural. I also love cutting and styling hair. I love to do a classic hairstyle, but it’s my favorite to do things that are outside of my comfort zone. Recently, I’ve been making things out of hair like rosaries, jewelry, and bows.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
It’s so easy to say that I am happy with where I am right now, and I am; I just feel there’s so much more growth for me in my career and life. I’ve dealt with my depression since I was little, and it’s hard when the reality is it’s not always going to be happy, and that’s ok. The hard parts make the good ones so much better.
I’ve put a lot of work into being where I am today, and it makes me happy and proud to be who I am and to still feel grounded, especially in the environment I work, in where there’s a lot of different big personalities.
