Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia Ink.
Hi Sonia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Sonia, and I want to share with you my journey, one that took me from the world of fashion photography in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to becoming a renowned tattoo artist in the Los Angeles.
Six years ago, I arrived in LA, camera in hand, ready to capture the world of fashion through my lens with an experience working with best models and creative people in Russia. But life had other plans. Instead of fashion shoots, I found myself in a loving but hectic home, working as a nanny for four energetic children. I felt adrift, questioning my purpose, and my passion for photography began to fade. I knew one thing though – I loved art and wanted to keep creating beauty.
I continued to work in low-paying jobs; I was so tired in this relentless circle of stressful immigrant life, without perfect English.
I was dreaming of something bigger, feeling my potential, but not understanding how to realize it. Then, by chance, I met a talented tattoo artist who was willing to show me the basics of tattooing process. At first, tattooing seemed scary and way too responsible. Tattooing was a world away from what I knew especially considering my religious family’s stance against it. But there was something undeniably captivating about it – the permanence, the personal stories, and ability to leave something important in person life. I was curious and decided to try it out.
Starting out was tough. I wanted to do fine line and super detailed tattoos, but there wasn’t much information on how to do them. I learned through YouTube, even if it was mostly videos about old-school tattooing, and looking through hours of useless content, I was able to find nuggets of information that I needed. I practiced relentlessly and sought advice from the few tattoo artists I knew. I got better and better. It was a world where precision was everything, and I was determined to master it.
And then suddenly, I realized that I am that successful tattoo artist with booking months ahead and ability to live in a perfect apartment, realize all my dreams, travels, etc., and I’m ready to move on to something bigger.
A year ago, me and my partner opened Gallery Mirai Tattoo. It’s more than just a tattoo studio for me; it’s a culmination of my journey, a place where I can impart my knowledge and experience. I started to Teach tattooing to my partner and few friends who was interested in tattoo art but didn’t know how to start. I am so happy that now I can teach others about my craft cos mentor like me was something I really needed in the beginning of my tattoo journey.
We’ve made our studio a cool place where we share our art and skills with each other, it’s a community there everyone is important.
Looking back, I see how much I’ve changed. From a young photographer in Russia to a nanny in LA and now a successful tattoo artist, my journey shows that it’s okay to change and find new ways to be artistic and happy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Searching for a place to work first Was really hard. No one wants a beginner at their shop. Language barrier- sometimes I was thinking that people think I’m stupid and can get that. I mean, It was hard to start charging proper amount of money- of course, I battled impostor syndrome
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
