Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofya Wang
Hi Sofya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been introduced to music from a young age studying classical piano, cello etc. I started to get bored playing other peoples music so sometimes while I was supposed to be practicing a classical piece, I would start making melodies and other instrumentals. This was around middle school. I sang in the shower a lot/ in private but never in public. One day, in boarding school– I asked myself an important question: “If I could do anything as a profession without any fear involved, what would I do?” and I saw myself singing in front of a crowd of people to music I wrote. From that moment one, I started to pursue a singing/songwriting career. Also, part of the reason that helped inspire me to ask myself that question was just how physically uncomfortable my boarding school was. It was a great school, just very incorporated with living outdoors and with nature–So we didn’t have heaters or AC. We had to make fires in a stove to keep warm and had to chop wood to heat up our shower tanks etc. It showed me not to fear discomfort–to be comfortable uncomfortable. So it inspired a sort of courage/fearlessness in me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up asian and gay, I’ve kept some of my emotions hidden from my family early on and found the most healing way of expressing them was through music — whether it was singing in my room in private, creating melodies on my instruments, or listening to Lady gaga or Katy Perry haha, it helped me accept myself and feel. My family now has learned to accept who I am and I’m very lucky that they are also very supportive of my music career too.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
