Check Out Sofía Élan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofía Élan.

Sofía Élan

Hi Sofía, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Right before finishing high school, I decided to apply to several music schools and ended up moving from Mexico to Boston. Despite my limited English proficiency, it was quite an adventure. Without delving into many details, I managed to graduate with a double major from Berklee College of Music in May 2021. After a three-month break for mental healing, I relocated to LA with my dog and no concrete plans. Initially staying with friends, I gradually fell in love with the city and decided to continue pursuing my dreams here. I’m Sofia Élan, a “cantautora” singer-songwriter, producer, and arranger, and I love music in many ways.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Embracing moving here, I never foresaw having cultural shocks upon my move to the USA. Yet, navigating subtle “politically incorrect” nuances has taught me to understand and adapt without sacrificing my personality and viewpoints. Living in a different place has fostered flexibility, compassion, and a sincere curiosity for diverse backgrounds. I cherish the multitude of cultures I’ve had the chance to encounter and love.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Indie Latin pop/rock-ish is what I do, but I think other than melody and singing my specially would be lyrics.

“I began ‘writing’ tunes in my mind before learning how to write words properly (at the age of 5, being a bit silly). I spoke fluent Spanish before turning one—a baby who could surprise with complete sentences. I’ve always adored words; intriguingly, I often invent new ones in both English and Spanish. I contemplate the rhythm of words, their flow, meanings, how context can shape them, and the joy of wordplay. Sometimes, simple words wield more power than elaborate ones. I value accents, how they dance with melodies, and more. In essence, I cherish lyric writing, perhaps why English isn’t my primary writing language, despite speaking it 24/7; my brain and my love for language remain deeply rooted in Spanish.”

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I like music, singing, my dog, family, friends, nature, and my love—they make me feel here. Feeling connected brings me joy. I tend to wander, overthink, and get anxious. But I’m happiest when I’m just here, and these people and things help me with that.
