Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyler Su.
Hi Skyler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Nanjing, a city rich in history and culture, which shaped my deep curiosity for stories and the people behind them. Growing up surrounded by art and heritage inspired my passion for creating meaningful designs that resonate with people.
I pursued my design education at ArtCenter College of Design, where I specialized in product design with minors in Business and Designmatters. These programs gave me a strong foundation in strategic thinking and showed me how design can create positive social impact. My time at ArtCenter was enriched with global experiences—studying at Design Academy Eindhoven in Europe, working on cruise line innovations with Royal Caribbean, and collaborating with COANIQUEM in Chile on the Safe Niños project. These experiences gave me a global perspective and deepened my understanding of how design connects people across different cultures.
Through these projects, I discovered my passion for branding and packaging design, which merges my skills in product design with my growing interest in graphic design. My freelance projects, including collaborations with various clients, have allowed me to explore branding strategies and packaging solutions while delivering culturally resonant designs.
Today, as a Branding Designer, I embrace a global perspective, weaving identity and legacy, in order to discover a deeper bond between brands and people. I find opportunities for innovation, expansion and extension; new markets, new lines and a fresh look. I use design to tell a cohesive story, helping brands to achieve longevity. I thrive on collaborating with global teams, uncovering best solutions and breathing new life into the brand experience.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am today has certainly not been smooth. Starting out in product design, I initially explored various projects and internships, which gave me a broad understanding of the design field. However, through these experiences, I realized that branding and packaging design align more closely with my passion for storytelling and creating meaningful connections through design. It combines my talent in design and interest in business.
Switching my career focus from product design to branding design was a significant challenge. As a product design student, it was difficult to access advanced graphic design courses, which are essential for building a strong foundation in branding. I had to self-teach many skills while simultaneously working on freelance projects and navigating new responsibilities. Each step required dedication and perseverance, but these experiences also solidified my determination to pursue branding and packaging design as my professional path.
This journey taught me the importance of adaptability and persistence, and it continues to inspire me to grow as a designer.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a branding designer with a focus on packaging design. My work lies at the intersection of storytelling, cultural resonance, and visual identity. I specialize in creating designs that not only look visually compelling but also connect with people on a deeper cultural level. With a background in product design and a passion for graphic design, I found my niche in branding and packaging, where I combine my technical skills and creative insights to bring brands to life.
I am most proud of my award-winning projects that highlight my ability to tackle diverse design challenges. My project Anonymity, inspired by Maison Margiela, won a Core77 Student Runner-Up Award in the Packaging Category, demonstrating my skill in conceptualizing and executing designs rooted in brand identity. Additionally, my work on the Safe Niños project in collaboration with COANIQUEM was recognized with the Core77 Student Notable Award in the Design for Social Impact category, showcasing my dedication to using design to create positive change.
What sets me apart is my global perspective and my adaptability to work across cultures. I’ve collaborated with international teams on projects like helping Chinese clients entering the US market and working with non-profit organization in Chile. These experiences have shaped my ability to create designs that resonate with diverse audiences while maintaining a cohesive brand identity.
Through every project, I strive to create meaningful designs that tell stories, foster connections, and leave a positive impact on society. My work is driven by a commitment to innovation, detail, and a deep understanding of the brands and people I design for.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Most of my mentors were people I met through school, either during classes or through events and activities organized by the institution. My biggest advice is to stay connected and be consistent in reaching out. Building meaningful relationships with potential mentors takes time and effort.
I’ve found that following up after initial meetings—whether it’s through a quick email or sharing updates about my work—helps maintain the connection. Showing genuine interest in their expertise and being open to their feedback also fosters mutual respect and trust. Consistency and clear communication have been key in cultivating these valuable relationships.
