Today we’d like to introduce you to Simona.
Hi Simona, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Germany to Bulgarian immigrant parents. My father fled communist Bulgaria to provide a better life for me, shortly after which communism fell apart. I started studying Law in Cologne, Germany but left that career to pursue my real creative calling which is writing, acting, singing and performing.
Once I moved to Los Angeles, I gravitated towards creative people and kept refining my skill sets. At first, it was kind of hard to adjust to American culture as well as the American accent, especially since English is my fourth language. At this point, people usually assume I am American, however I’ll never abandon my Bulgarian roots.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, I was struggling with my accent that now seems to have left me. I used to get acting auditions as a southern girl while I literally have no connection to that part of the country nor could I do a southern accent. I would never want to embarrass myself by trying to do an accent like that which I wouldn’t be able to master. But besides that, my biggest challenge has been being a woman in Hollywood. You would assume #metoo would have changed something but this was not the case for me personally. I have been called out for asking for harassment by presenting myself in a sexy manner. However, I don’t do the things I do for men’s approval, in fact dealing with older men in this industry has been my biggest obstacle. It would get to a point where I would be intimidated and felt uncomfortable by compliments of any sexual nature. I literally had a producer rip off my shirt during an audition, telling me I was a little tense and to do my reading naked. I did not get the part, lol.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor/singer who writes all of her projects herself. My feature film storylines as well as my songs are always a part of me which by nature makes it a female empowerment project. I don’t hate on others; either I fully support you, or I just don’t care. I don’t understand hate. If people hate on someone, I believe they just hate themselves. I am proud of being pro-women because my projects present confident women that won’t be put down by misogynistic behavior. And don’t get me wrong, I love men, however some of them don’t love me back and do me dirty.
I am right now working on many new singles and an album with some of my producers such as Dakari and Austin Brown. We are working on a kind of modern 2000s edgy girl pop that’s uplifting because I don’t like staying in a depressive mode for too long.
At the moment, I am in pre-production for my feature film “Shyne” that I have been working on for the past two years. It’s going to be a very dramatic and edgy film.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My parents sneaking me into a club when I was six years old to go dancing all night.
