Check Out Scott Howe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Howe.

Hi Scott, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I was always drawn to art but didn’t have a real outlet until I was introduced to graffiti in 1990. That moment sparked a lifelong journey. Art became my foundation—leading me to create clothing graphics, design jewelry, and eventually open an art-based hip hop shop.

The Hyste was originally developed to showcase amazing L.A. artists at events. In 2014, a friend and I explored the idea of launching a mural company. While our visions eventually diverged, that experience lit the path forward. In 2017, I officially founded The Hyste LLC as a mural and signage company.

Since then, this journey has taken me across the country, painting for clients like the LA Rams, NBA, USMC, and the City of Los Angeles. I’ve had the honor of designing and painting murals at over 250 schools throughout Southern California, working with numerous nonprofits, and collaborating with an incredible team.

Today, I continue to paint every day—committed to uplifting communities and transforming blank walls into vibrant reflections of culture, history, and identity.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every journey has its struggles. We started with early challenges, from navigating partner differences to simply finding clients. Art—especially murals and signage—is often seen as a luxury, not a necessity, so it took a lot of determination and consistency to build a client base.

This industry can be unpredictable, which is why I’m always looking six months ahead, planning and pushing to secure the next project. Like any business, there are growing pains, and it’s all about being flexible and learning to adapt. The key is to keep moving forward—one wall, one opportunity at a time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating cool, unique murals for schools—and it’s that distinct style that sets us apart from other companies painting on campuses. Inspiration is everywhere for me: other artists, movies, architecture, even everyday visuals. I’m constantly studying and evolving.

Every school is different, and I treat each campus like a blank canvas tailored to their theme, branding, and community vision. No two murals are the same. The real reward is seeing students connect with the artwork—when they’re excited, inspired, or just proud of how their school looks, that’s what makes it all worth it.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Every small business owner takes a risk on themselves. If you don’t believe in your brand or product, it’s hard for anyone else to. It’s not always easy—there’s no guaranteed paycheck, and that uncertainty can be stressful. But there’s something powerful about earning for yourself, building something from the ground up, and seeing your vision come to life.

The best advice I can give is simple: just try. Don’t let the “what ifs” hold you back. Bet on yourself and keep pushing.
