Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxane Dupont.
Hi Roxane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m from France, and I always wanted to work in Entertainment without knowing what I would do exactly. But the one thing I was sure of was that I wanted to do it in Hollywood. Coming to LA and working in Film and TV was always my main goal. I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Audiovisual Production at EICAR Paris last year. During these two years of film school, I worked as a producer on student films, and I was lucky enough to be a production intern on the set of an important TV show and to work for a full year as an assistant in a production company.
I loved production, but I was also missing the more creative part and I had so many stories that I wanted to give life to that I decided to enroll in the Film and TV Development Certificate at UCLA Extension. This was my chance to come to the city of my dreams and give screenwriting a try – which I always wanted to do but was too scared to fail at.
After one year at UCLA, I wrote my first draft for a TV pilot, started writing my own feature film, participated in several student short films, and discovered an interest in BTS photography.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it wasn’t… I think leaving your country, your family and friends, and everything you know and love behind is never a smooth road. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The entertainment industry is so hard to break into and the living costs in LA are so high that I knew coming here was a big risk to take, with no guarantee at the end. I put all my savings into this dream without knowing if it would lead me anywhere. I also had to decline some great job opportunities in France. There are so many questions and doubts when you want to move abroad: What if I don’t find a job? What if I don’t succeed? What if I can’t meet anyone? Is it the right decision? It’s very easy to give up and decide to stay home. But I received tons of support from my family, which helped A LOT. But it was definitely worth it, and I would do everything again in a heartbeat.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do production and writing for film and TV. I worked on some productions back in France, as a producer for student short films – including one that was Awarded Best Film at EICAR’s own Awards Ceremony – and as an assistant intern and apprentice. I worked on set and in an office, on the development, production, and post-production stages of different projects, on fiction and documentaries, for TV and features. I explored a lot of different styles which allows me to know what I want to do (and what I don’t). I want to specialize in fiction, mostly TV (“watching series” has always been my answer to “what’s your hobby?”), and I want to produce and write. My one big dream is to become a showrunner and have my own show.
I don’t want to have to choose between producing and writing. They’re two very different things, but they’re also complementary. I only started writing when I arrived in LA last January, but I love it and I really want to be able to create my own thing, whether it’s a movie or a series. I actually just finished writing my first draft for a TV pilot, of which I’m very proud! The next steps will be re-writing, re-writing, and… re-writing! Before sending it to festivals or fellowship programs. I’m also working on a feature film, and I can’t wait to finish it!
On another note, I also take BTS photography and I try to go on as many sets as I can to take pictures. I love capturing these moments where everyone works together in the making of something greater. I also want my pictures to capture the mood of the movie we’re shooting, I want them to convey an artistic vision of what’s going on behind the scenes.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
