Check Out Rosi Koeper’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosi Koeper

Hi Rosi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a photographer for as long as I can remember. From using my mom’s point and shoot film camera on vacations and bringing the film to the local drug store to buying my first DSLR when I turned 18, it has been a passion throughout my entire life. My subjects were friends and family, nature and animals. You can call it learning by doing and I was doing it a LOT. I vividly remember inviting the entire neighborhood to hour-long slide projector shows. As I got older it became more and more a thing to take family pictures for everyone. I began charging for these sessions mostly to be able to afford more gear. My list of lenses and cameras I want to try is never ending. Then word of mouth did the rest. The word spread and the business grew. I am now photographing around 180 families and couples a year and I love every second of it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As much as I love my job, it is not always easy to be a working mom. I chose to do this full time and forgo my career as a teacher and child therapist mainly to be able to go to those Softball games and have family dinners. But when the busy season hits my kids definitely notice my 12 hour work days. Additionally child care is a huge struggle. With a partner who works unpredictable shifts I have to rely on a strong community of friends to help with my kids. They say it takes a village and it is very true.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Family Portrait and Lifestyle Photography. Those kids you think are too wild for a session? Bring them! Your highly spirited children? The more energy the better! My priority is always to connect with whoever I have in front of the lens first. Photography is a very personal experience and it should be fun, easy and emotional. If you feel comfortable with me I will be able to portray you and your relationships the way they are. My clients come back every year for that exact reason. They want someone they can trust and who has a vision. It might take some jokes or silly games to get authentic smiles and I am 100% down for that. I am proud of the relationships I have built over the years and my favorite thing is seeing families and kids grow year after year.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I never imagined I could be successful in something that I enjoy this much. I have found that taking it one step at a time, improving bit by bit and always trying to grow in all areas is the key to slow and steady success. It is incredibly fulfilling to show my two girls how believing in yourself and putting everything you have into something really pays off in the end. It is not the career I imagined I would have full time but it makes me happy. Capturing people, learning their stories, and freezing a moment to make it a memory that lasts beyond their lives as they are right now is something I truly believe people should invest in. Beyond Holiday cards and social media, there is a lot of value in remembering you and your family just as they are right now. Time flies and I am able to freeze a tiny moment of it all.
