Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Schwartz.
Rob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My father was the subject of one of the all-time best-selling memoirs, Tuesdays with Morrie. A few years before that was written, and before he got ill, he wrote a book on remaining vibrant and creative while you age. I had discussed the book with him in great detail. He put the book aside after he got ill, and it was never published. I rediscovered the manuscript, and after much editing and contributing essays, I published the book. It has a lot of life insight and wonderful strategies to live life to its fullest. The response has been enthusiastic. I was on Good Morning America, Nightline, and PBS Newshour, among many other TV shows.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Editing the book was a very long process that involved me grieving for my father and remembering him. For the actual editing, I took special care to preserve my dad’s voice. It was also a long process to find the right team to publish and publicize the book.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an entrepreneur, writer, and music & film producer active for more than 20 years in journalism, entertainment and investing for the US and Asia. My journalistic work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Interview, Melody Maker, and many others. Since 2008, I have been an Asia Correspondent for Billboard magazine and a regular guest on TV shows like J Flicks (NHK World), BBC World, CNN, and MNET TV to discuss music, film, and the entertainment business in Asia. I have produced three feature films and one documentary as well as smaller projects.
In 2018, Rob was an Executive Producer of the feature film Bernard and Huey, which is directed by LA indie legend Dan Mirvish (co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival) with a screenplay by Pulitzer prize/Oscar winner Jules Feiffer. It stars Oscar-winner Jim Rash and well-known actor David Koechner. The work has won awards in numerous festivals, including the Grand Prize at the Guam International Film Festival. Recently, I edited and wrote essays for the book authored by my father, Morrie Schwartz (Tuesdays with Morrie). The Wisdom of Morrie has gotten great reviews and an enthusiastic reception. Barnes & Noble in The Grove highlighted it and put a video of me on their Instagram.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The most important lesson from it is understanding the crucial things in our lives in our relationships with the people we love, friends, family, workmates, etc.
