Today we’d like to introduce you to Reyna Day
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Hollywood, California into a family of musicians as my mother was a singer, and my father was the drummer of a band, called “Yoli Lox and the Bears” in the late 80’s. My daily life as a child consist of me going to school and going straight to the recording studio or TV/film set somewhere in Los Angeles or the San Fernando Valley until my mother or father was finished working. One of the coolest stories that I was told was that when I was less than six months old, the iconic little Richard held me high up in the air (like “Simba” from the “Lion King”) and blessed me over and over again in Jesus name and pretty much refused to give me back to my parents because they said he was so smitten by me. Most people that know me and my exuberant personality, actually say that makes perfect sense for me to experience something like that so early in my life. As a child, I would often get booked for modeling, acting, and singing gigs however, when I showed up on the day, we were to shoot the project that usually have a black eye or scratches and bruises because I was such a rough tomboy as a kid wrestling, riding bikes down huge hills in Culver City and taking chances as the fearless child that I was! Due to the demand of time required to chase your dreams in show business, My parents decided that I would be the only child to My mother who is a strong willed independent Mexican singer, actress and writer and my father is a laid back Italian drummer, producer and Grammy Award winning engineer. As an only child, I often would get bored and go outside to see what activities I could get into which led to me getting in trouble as early as 12 years old with my first arrest after a violent school fight. It was in juvenile Hall, my third time at the age of 16 where I gave my life to Christ after facing a trial that threatened to put me in prison for 8 years in Northern California for robbery and possession with intent to sell drugs. I was shot at many time during my youth, as well as gun to my head before I gave my life to the lord because I truly believe that I was angry about being abused as a child (sexually) and feeling like I was no one’s priority. Actually, Life was not perfect, but it definitely got easier. I remember flipping on the 110 Freeway in South LA during a physical altercation with my then boyfriend while I was driving home from my fathers house, on fathers day in 2002. It was a miracle that w all survived, especially the baby to my roomate who was sleeping in the back seat. I knew i needed a big change, so I moved away from my old neighborhood and became a mom at 21 which really calmed me down. Although I desire to change my lifestyle, my partner at the time was still very active in the gang life in Inglewood, California just outside of Los Angeles. I made the decision to move to the San Fernando Valley and work three jobs to support my daughter and soon after received a vision from God at 25 to start the 1st Christian hip-hop and talk show on the radio in Los Angeles on 99.5 FM KKLA on Saturday nights. I saw a vision of a radio tower with the initials “K.I.N.G” in fiery flames at the top and I heard the voice of God say “Talk to my children, and let them know they are not alone.” at the time I received this vision I was working at Chalice recording studios in Hollywood as an assistant, too all of the big names that would come in on a daily basis like Pharrell, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and more. The vision that I received, however, was so strong, but I left everything to follow with God told me to do. At the time I had no experience as a radio host, but there was no turning back and I was honored to be the first to play some of the biggest names in gospel hip-hop today like Kirk Franklin, Lecrae, KB and Tedashii. I married my Now husband, Brandon Young in October 2011 and gave birth to my son a year later and gave birth to another daughter a year later and I started to really struggle with PTSD from my life in the streets as a youth. I made the decision to take a break from ministry and my radio show in 2013 because I didn’t want to miss out on all the healing that I believe God had for me and I wanted my children to know that even though I didn’t have much time with my parents, they would know that I love them more than any movie or TV show could have her fulfill me. So in 2015, I decided to slowly start working in Christian radio again by working “on-air” as a host/personality and announcer on one of the biggest Christian radio stations in the world K-WAVE 107.9 FM as well as their sister stations in Las Vegas and San Diego stations 96.9 FM And 98.9 FM. In 2020, I was offered a time slot on Dash Radio station with my old show KING FM Radio. Since May 2022, I have been the Host and “on-air personality” for my very own daily broadcast on SiriusXM channel 140 Holy Culture Radio and my show is called the daylight morning show where I cover current events and I play the hottest in Gospel Hip Hop and Rhythm & Praise (like R & B) music. I recently wrote a children’s TV series that is all about teaching kids how to practically include God in their daily life and shares lessons about living a life full of joy and protecting themselves by choosing not to watch or listen to at such a young age. I want kids to know that life with. God is not boring! I also just published my first children’s book called “Paul the Praying Mantis Wants To Know… What Is A Friend?” Sometimes I look at the main character in the book that I recently released, and I see a lot of myself in this funny little insect character. It took me a while to stop trying to control everything and to “let go and let God” and truly see help with some of the pain that I was dealing with, but once I reached out for help that was surrounded by an amazing community at my new church Revelation Church in LA and I’m in the most loving season of my life. Not only do I truly feel the love from so many around me but I’m able to love in return, without holding back and trusting God for the excitement of each new day!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Many would call me a “trailblazer” because I’m doing things have never been done before, but it’s hard because I’ve had to learn what doesn’t work by being the first person to actually do it, and on a national scale. My recent numbers show that I have an average of 220,000 listeners per week on my morning radio show on SiriusXM, which means every morning as a mother of 4 amazing kids, I have to be awake and excited and not take the day before or the exhaustion of football games and practice or any family drama with me into the morning broadcast Monday – Friday. Most business owners in Entertainment Company’s are Men, and same with most Ministers, so when it comes to the entertainment business are they’re not expected to be home all the time, but I am, and I am also expected to be at multiple concerts and events that are happening in Los Angeles and any other state sometimes when I have to travel for award shows. Yes it’s tough, but it’s worth it when my kids see that I have brought them with me to share in the life of entertainment that I chose to pursue and not leave them behind. I don’t believe that ANY road is smooth as a matter of fact it’s up to us to take the pieces that life gives us and mold them and shape them and sand them down into a smooth road… that’s the writer in me there!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love being a Host!! I could be on air, or in the mornings or at events, I love being able to set the tone and bring excitement to a show or an event. I am known for introducing so many people to some of the hottest music with both banging tracks and lyrics! that also has an amazing message because it is actually Gospel music, which is inspirational. I am the most proud of being the first person to have a gospel hip-hop radio show on the Los Angeles airwaves. I am set apart from others because I’m not afraid to take chances and go into areas like the hood (the housing projects) and play with the kids and let them know they can have fun while honoring God and by listening to amazing life giving music or in the same day as I go on TBN and preach to thounsands at a private auction or charity, or even a pop up in Melrose and both with style and grace and having fun at the same time.
What matters most to you? Why?
What means the most me especially right now is showing kids they can have fun and don’t need to grow up too quick. Also, that even though you may have had a troubled start or you may have felt like someone that your family threw away in order to take care of themselves first… as long as you don’t give up and you continue to feed yourself positive content, and stay connected to each other, you can help each other win day by day to see what God has in store for you tomorrow.
