Today we’d like to introduce you to Peng Zhou.
Hi Peng, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my art journey from the period of my teenage. It began with traditional training, sketch, watercolor, design, etc. At that time, I’ve been obsessed with oil painting, then I started to learn it. After I entered college, my major tended to Chinese opera, Chinese meticulous painting, etc. I had fall in love with Chinese painting and got more deeply understanding the Chinese aesthetics. In the beginning, photography is one of my interests, and then I found photography could be a way to create artwork. For me, I prefer my art more conceptual and visual experiences of aesthetics more than a series of documentary photos. To realize this point and put it into practice took me few years. Now, I’m exploring photography and painting by mix-media artworks and NFTs.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Stick on one thing and make it the best. This is what I believe. One thing is enough. Overall, my career is in the direction of my intention. It had obstacles, back and forth but it’s normal. This is life. Being an artist is not an easy job and learn how to compromise is very important. Commercial photography is the best way to solve the living costs and support me to continue creating artworks. It makes a good balance in my life between make art and make money.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My artworks separate into two parts: physical artworks and NFTs. Physical artworks include contemporary photographs printed with museum-level archive paper and mixed-media artwork – photography combing with drawing/painting. Physical means these works existed in the real world. NFTs is existing in the internet or virtual world. Simply saying, this is a thread of code point to the unique artwork on the blockchain. AI-generated artworks are the ones I’m focusing on and the final artworks present by NTFs. I also made a digital vision of photography + drawing/painting.
The forms or materials help me to show my art concept. The most important thing is how an artist thinks – the concepts. There are some keywords that can generalize my ideas or the aspects of thinking: Western and Eastern aesthetics, Philosophy, Relativity and Dialectics, Changes and Harmony.
I’m keeping breakout myself, and I have to say thanks to the judges and professors who had given credit for my artworks in the awards, exhibitions, and artist residency.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
AI-generated artwork is the one I can collaborate with programmers. This kind of art form could be created by a team. The techs are not a piece of news, but the form or method for creating artworks is highly developing in recent years. There are platforms that sell NFTs to collectors and art lovers. On the other side, I represent by the galleries, just as the traditional way.
