Check Out Noah Kinsey’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Kinsey.

Hi Noah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I actually moved out here in 2010 thinking I was going to only be an actor, which I did (and still) do, acting in TV, film, and voiceover. But as I settled into LA, I learned that my background in advertising and business made me an asset to production companies when it came to product placement, marketing, and successfully pitching projects to investors because I could speak the language of Return on Investment instead of only talking creative, which really doesn’t excite those who fund films as much as most people think. They want to know that the project will make them money and see HOW it is positioned to do just that. And because I was good at that, I kept getting brought on to projects to get them over that finish line.

Also, while I’ve been a published writer since I was 21, I hadn’t considered transitioning into a professional screenwriter until I saw how crafting your own stories allows you to set your own career path. In 2013, I was hired by a producer to write their film and since then it’s snowballed to where – besides my own scripts – I’m hired as a screenwriter or script doctor regularly. And some of my most high-profile work has come from a talent or producer asking me to take their kernel of an idea and creating a series or film from it.

So while I initially felt like I came out here with a late start, now I’m grateful for my past experience outside of the industry because I’ve been able to use it in a way that really makes me stand apart from others by using my creative background and business background to elevate stories in a way that appeals to a larger audience without losing the core artistic integrity of the intellectual property.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oof. No. This road has been incredibly bumpy. A lot of that has to do with moving out here with zero industry contacts trying to make it in a field where there’s no one path to your goal and no timeline for when success either happens or doesn’t, and there are only a million dead ends and scam artists in your way. I’ve had talent agents reach out to represent me only to sign with them and 100% of the work I got was a result of me putting myself out there while they did nothing, film projects fall apart, etc. I could go on and on but it’s probably nothing that anyone else in my industry has gone through. You really have to love this and know it’s what you were meant to do because the struggles and failures will always outnumber the successes by a wide margin. But I truly believe the struggles make you stronger and also make you a better, more grateful human because you appreciate the success more.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a lot of people in my field, I’m a multi-hyphenate. I’m a creator, showrunner, producer, writer, podcast host, and actor.

What I’m most known for is building worlds that are both creatively rich and also highly marketable. And I’ve used my platform to help amplify voices of those not normally heard on “The #CoffeeTime Podcast with Noah Kinsey.”

Recently, I’ve stepped up that effort by launching my production company Pier Left Productions to produce series and films that will showcase a diverse group of people in front of and behind the camera with the explicit purpose of showing that diverse voices and experiences are still relatable to all.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My first mentor out here was John Semper – the showrunner and lead writer of the Spider-Man cartoon from the 90’s that is still the best cartoon iteration of the character. I met him as an actor for one of his movies where I was both a live action role and a voiceover character. We hit it off and became friends, and our regular lunches at Coral Cafe in Burbank became the thing I looked forward to the most each month. His guidance, experience, and insight has been invaluable to me.
