Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickey (Sumeng) Wang.
Hi Mickey (Sumeng), thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Shanghai, China. From as early as I can recall, I’ve always wanted to be a storyteller. Something about stories is just fascinating to me. I came to the US at 18 for college. During my freshman year at Cornell University, I took an Introduction to Philosophy class and instantly fell in love. This led to me obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. Rather than a detour from my path to becoming a creative, this experience has shaped my artistic style and content. During my junior year, I first came across film editing during a film production class and I felt like I finally found the perfect job for me. From there on, I attended the MFA program in film production at USC, during which I focused on editing. And now, I am a freelance editor.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My path to becoming an editor has not always been smooth. I got into film production a little later compared to my peers. It took me a while to get familiar with all the terms and references. However, I felt like my previous experience has provided me with a unique perspective as an editor.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a freelance editor and I have been editing content of a variety of genres. I’m particularly drawn to philosophical and poetic films and I’m always happy to challenge myself with new things. During my time at USC, I was the editor of “Provenance”, which won the Best Drama Series at the 42nd College Television Awards and the USC faculty award for Best Editing. The short films “Playground” and “Agua de tu Madre” that I edited have been doing really well at festivals. Recently, I’ve been editing a music video and a documentary on an unconventional monk.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I was still doing my MFA program when Covid hit. It was especially challenging for us in film production. At the same time, the crisis has led to rapid development in virtual production. More and more jobs have become gone virtual, too. It’s amazing how fast our community can adapt and how each of us can adapt too.
