Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Christian
Hi Maurice, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in the city of Chicago in a dance group named “The Puppets” at 17 years old. The dance style was called Locking. A short time later a popular TV dance show had emerged called “Soul Train” where we all originally met and became friends to form the dance group.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Somewhat of a smooth road but became challenging as we began to become popular throughout the local areas of Chicago from the westside to the southside. Having a reputation of thrilling the audiences with our dance routines we quickly realized we were being coveted by other dance groups forming locally in the areas inspired by our unique dance style. This prompted us to rehears even more than we had been, and we challenged ourselves to create even more original and complicated dance routines in order to take things to a higher level as we wanted to stay ahead of the curve in dancing. The struggles were acquiring members who were committed to the group, make rehearsals and believed in achieving the goal we set forth for ourselves as visions are often dismissed as unrealistic and there-for taken for granted and passed off as a mere dream.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I entertain! I specialize in creating choreography for live performances, write original songs and vocals (singing). I also dabble in impersonating other artists all in fun but prefer to be original with what I do. I’m known for being a great performer encompassing all I have mentioned above. I’m most proud of the hard work and persistence it took to arrive to where I am now and to become a great performing artist. What sets me apart from others is versatility in my abilities to dance, sing, write songs and am often told I have a sound and style like no one else.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a pencil artist who as a child was able to draw and create pictures of just about everything and that my real aspiration was to become a lawyer.
