Today we’d like to introduce you to Marti McFly Smith.
Hi Marti McFly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Covid created a pivot year in 2020 for many of us and although my journey truly begins in 1991 at St Charles hospital in Bend, Oregon, my author trek was a Covid baby.
Writing has been a part of my life ever since I was old enough to start a journal, I actually still have many of these journals thanks to my mom. I wrote Hey Girl! in 2020 as a love letter to my younger self, the girl who needed to hear how worthy she truly is.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Pivoting is hard, period. There are days when I feel like a complete fraud and days when I feel like I am acting on my divine purpose.
It’s been difficult to break through as a debut author. I had an interest in the book from a traditional publisher, but the relationship did not end up working out how I had hoped. Although it was a tough blow, I knew that little me needed this book to be published.
I ended up forming my own imprint and published Hey Girl! under Princey Rock. I have felt the support from my entire community, but my husband has been my biggest champion. He is a go-for-it type of guy and when I read him the book for the first time all he said was “yes”. With this kind of support, it was an easy decision to go for it! We are at a time in our lives where we had the privilege of taking this risk and I’m so glad we did.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialise in meaningful simple books for tiny humans. Hey Girl! is the first of many social & emotional learning books to help young children develop into adults with a positive self-perspective.
What sets me apart is the best pen name ever…Marti McFly, all three Back To The Future films are equally as good – shout out to Michael J. Fox!
I also truly believe in this work. It’s our birthright to know love and through my books, I hope I can help build that foundation for children. It’s what helps me push through on hard days and inspires all of my writing.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I LOVE Los Angeles. Coming from the PNW, I cherish the sunshine in Southern California. Grateful to be adopted by one of the best cities in the world!
Of course there are things to change. Nowhere is perfect, but I’ll keep it positive today!
