Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyra Star.
Hi Lyra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to LA a little over four years ago to become a more full-time yoga teacher and to pursue my music career… I ended up being encouraged by friends to enter the performing arts world as a contortionist, so I started to delve into this art form. I am self-trained and now perform regularly at private and public events in LA.
For my solo acts at the variety and burlesque shows, I usually perform to my original music. Even though it was scary to move down here, it has been such an incredible opportunity for me to explore my creative side, collaborate with others, and grow and develop as an artist.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, but I think that’s part of the artistic journey. One of the biggest struggles for me was the pandemic because I had only been in LA for a little over a year when everything shut down and stayed that way for quite some time. I was able to do some virtual performances and work on recording music, but the live gigs are what I truly love.
Other struggles include constantly having to hustle and feeling overwhelmed because the music industry and the entertainment industry are both challenging to navigate. On top of that, I also had to be hustling in the fitness world as a yoga/pilates instructor. Financially, I spent a lot of money on music videos and recording, which takes its toll when you’re not making much money. Fortunately, my family is super supportive.
I’m still working on getting my name out there more in the performing arts world, but I’m finally feeling like I’m a bit more established now that I’ve been in the city for a while. I finally have my teaching schedule the way I want it with weekends off to do gigs and/or photo/video shoots.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Lyra Star is my stage name, and I’m known for being a professional contortionist and a singer/songwriter… I’m most proud of the music videos that I’ve been releasing over the past few years because they allow me to combine my original songs with my contortion performances in a really beautiful, artistic way. This is also what sets me apart from others: being both a performing artist (contortionist) and a musician.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
In general, what matters most to me is living a happy and fulfilling life and connecting with other humans… we only get one chance for that on this planet, so I think it’s super important to do what you love as much as possible. I feel very grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to follow my heart over the years and do exactly that. My path has also led me to meet and connect with some of the most wonderful and inspiring people.
