Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Loken.
Hi Lucy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always a very outgoing kid – always ready to put on a show for whoever I could get to sit and watch. I was obsessed with musicals, like “Grease” and “The Sound of Music.” I would put them on our TV and sing and dance along with the characters on screen. So when my parents asked if I wanted to audition for a show at a local theatre I jumped at the chance. I remember getting up on stage and never wanting to get off. After a few years of doing theatre I transitioned into the TV and film world. Most of my teenage years were spent in the car with my mom, driving all across LA to get to my auditions. Or sitting in waiting rooms, going over my lines and waiting for my name to be called. Every audition led me to where I am today, and I’m so grateful for every experience I’ve had along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d be lying if I said it’s been a smooth road. Having been in this business for as long as I have, I’ve had so many ups and downs. There have been times where I’m lucky enough to be working steadily, and then there have been long stretches where I’m not working at all. It’s during the slower times though, that I feel like I’ve learned the most. In the past, I really struggled with staying positive when it feels like nothing is happening. It can be so frustrating when you feel like you’ve put in so much work, yet it doesn’t feel like you’re moving forward. I’ve had to learn over time that so much of this job and surviving in this industry is dependent on your mindset. If you’re always dwelling on missed opportunities or the “what ifs”, you can’t see all the possibilities of what’s ahead. There have been so many times where I’ve been so close to booking a role and I don’t end up getting it, and then right after that I end up booking something even better. So in those moments when I’m feeling a little defeated, I try to remind myself that there are so many opportunities that are yet to come. There will always be another great project or role to look forward to.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been so lucky to have worked on so many great shows and movies throughout the years. I remember going in to audition for “Teen Wolf” and being so excited to even get the audition because I was such a big fan of the show when it came out. Getting to work with so many actors who I had watched and loved for years was such a cool experience. I felt the same way when I booked a role on “The Good Doctor.” I’ve been a big fan of Freddie Highmore’s for years, so I was a little starstruck when I met him on set. Not only did I get to work with him on camera, he was also directing the episode. Those two jobs definitely stand out to me as highlights in my career because of the personal ties I had to those shows and actors. I also have a couple of projects coming out soon that I’m super excited about! I worked on a movie last year called “A Blind Bargain”, which is coming out in the near future. The film takes place in the late 60’s, which I was so excited about because it has always been a dream of mine to play a character from that time period. The movie was shot on film as well, which was really cool to be a part of. I also just wrapped filming on another movie called “Petunia.” I was really excited to join the project because it’s about a cat, and I’m a huge cat lover. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a bit of a crazy cat lady. Unfortunately I didn’t end up having any scenes with the cat, which was a little heartbreaking for me, but I still had a great time working on the film and I can’t wait for people to see it.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
My favorite thing about LA is the sense of community we have here. I witnessed it first hand with the way that everyone came together to help and support those affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires earlier this year. I lived in Altadena for 5 years and my family is still there, so the town is very near and dear to my heart. Seeing people from all over Los Angeles join together to help those in need was so special. I’ve never seen anything like it. When our community is in need, everyone puts aside whatever is going on in their own lives to be of service and to help. I believe that’s what the heart of LA is, and I am so proud to be from here.
My least favorite thing about LA? The weather.
