Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorraine Pennington.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in LA in Echo Park and from a young age, I was surrounded by Musicians (my dad was a jazz guitarist) and artists… I was always doing an art project in the garage with my mom…I did ceramics and designed a line of jewelry before I started painting. I started painting about 17 years ago and have loved expressing myself in this medium.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it was a smooth road it definitely had its ups and downs. Have more exposure definitely can make a difference. I think Instagram has definitely helped expose my art to more people worldwide.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My artwork is very calming and has a lot of texture. I am very drawn to sculpture so I would say some of my artwork is two-dimensional because of that attraction. I strive to evoke a sense of tranquility with the use of mute colors and raw texture. I think our world is so full of stimuli that it is nice to come home and feel relaxed in your home environment. And your artwork plays a big role in creating that calm.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
We had a steep hill in Echo park and when someone got a new appliance, we will get the empty box and all the kids in the neighborhood would take turns jumping on it and slide down the grassy hill. Also, I am a big reader and our neighbor was a schoolteacher and she would take her daughter and myself to the LA public library and let us stay there for hours. Not only is the library beautiful but all those books to read was pure heaven.
