Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Monaco
Hi Lisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As with most people, I found myself bored during the quarantine period of the pandemic from 2020 – 2021. During that time, I began taking photos and sharing them. I mostly shot in and around my neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.
This past January, I took a two week long trip through Nevada and California, also visiting parts of Arizona and Utah. I found myself enthralled with the desert scenery, particularly in Palm Springs. I also had time during the trip to visit Santa Monica, which I love since I grew up in a beach town near Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY.
I’m so glad my West Coast photos have resonated with you, that’s the goal of any photographer. I think that as a visitor rather than a resident, I’m able to notice things that may seem mundane to others, and make it exciting, the way I see it. The goal of my photography is to share my perspective with others, to try to get them to see what I see and feel something.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been learning as I go. I try not to get too consumed with getting “the perfect shot” and just shooting what moves me.
Recently, I got a professional camera, a Panasonic Lumix, and learning how to use it and change settings has been a little difficult, but fun. However, the tool that you use isn’t as important as your vision and inspiration.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I’m a freelance photographer and I focus on nature and urban settings. Most of my photos are scenic rather than of a particular subject or person.
I’m known for my photos of Coney Island, particularly sunset beach shots. I tried to get some of those during my last trip to LA but the weather was not cooperating unfortunately.
I’m most proud of things like this, people being interested and moved by my photos. I’m entirely self taught, so being able to build a robust portfolio and reach an audience brings me a lot of pride.
What sets me apart from others is that I tend to notice small things that other people might not. Maybe it’s a ladybug or bee on a flower, a raindrop on a leaf, or even a small wildflower growing on the sidewalk. You can find beauty everywhere if you look hard enough.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Santa Monica, the colors and vibrancy, the beach of course. I feel at home there, it reminds me of Coney Island. I also love Palm Springs and the mid century modern aesthetic. Coming from New York, California as a whole just has a bit of a more laid back vibe.
My least favorite thing has to be the traffic. I finally experienced real LA traffic and that is something that can definitely ruin your day.
