Check Out Leo Roku Romero’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Roku Romero.

Hi Leo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Getting started had been really difficult, my creative journey had taken me to so many places before realizing the studio was where I found myself most aligned. It’s something about the soundproof rooms and dimmed-down lights that make the melancholy just a little more pleasurable. I feel heard, I feel satisfied, and it all feels so therapeutic. I only wish I had been introduced to music at an earlier age. I can look back at times it would’ve been there for me. I only started creating music a little over a year now but I’ve definitely poured a lot of time into it and thankfully had the opportunity to turn it into a career.

I initially started my creative journey through makeup. I logged onto social media on a gloomy day in middle school for one reason only… I discovered makeup and wanted to spend my time after school curating videos for others to watch, it was an enjoyable pastime for me and I never realized how far it’d take me. Boys in makeup were a big taboo and looking back at it I was a little psychotic for doing & following through but I don’t think I’d do anything differently. I met so many great friends, creatives, and artists along the way. One of them being a close friend of mine, IV. She’s been a big tribute not only to my musical journey but my own life. I don’t think I’d be here now, breathing and alive if it wasn’t for her.

We had met on set a few years ago as I was doing her makeup and naturally, we bonded and became closer. I was inspired by her creative energy in studios, sets, and ballads. I had never been introduced to music growing up as it was looked down upon in most of my family. However, once the choice was in my hands, I definitely took the leap of faith and went balls deep. Now, here we are.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Growing up, the arts was one of the last things I could focus on. I was too distracted by everything going wrong around me. Facing really big hurdles as a child really prepared me for where I am now to be honest. I think people don’t realize how young of an individual I am and the amount of hard work that I have to put into each day without the warrant it will all work out.

Besides the external factors, living in a fast-paced environment has been challenging to my mental health but channeling it into art has been helpful in keeping things afloat. It can get hard to keep on moving forward but I am trying my best and I hope those who listen to what I’ve created feel the emotion and see the vision.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I recently had the pleasure of dropping my first single, “Foolish” with Elektra. I worked on this very personal song with a favorite producer & friend of mine Jack, AKA Good Harbor, and Caleb Dietz. I try to have a well-rounded piece of art visually and audibly and I am thankful to have found friends who care about my music as much as I do.

I am excited to share nostalgic sounds, witty lyrics, and enticing anecdotes on my next EP coming this summer.
