Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Lam.
Hi Leo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I came to LA at the age of 19 to attend university at Cal State Northridge, I met a dancer on campus who convinced me to try out for the campus dance team and after we were both initiated into the group, I fell in love with dance. Then following one of my first performances with the team at LA’s Carnival Choreographer’s Showcase, I met a group of dancers who were a part of the Monsters Of Hip hop family who took me in and introduced me to the professional dance training world. I started training every single day and after about a year and a half later, I got signed to my first dance agency and the rest is history. I’ve had some incredible opportunities and have accomplished things that I never thought were possible. I’ve now been dancing professionally for 13 years and have worked with the likes of Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Kesha, JLo, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Shania Twain, Hailee Steinfeld, Kacey Musgraves, & worked on shows such as Glee, Lucifer, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Dear White People, X-Factor, Jane The Virgin, and many more. It still boggles my mind that I’ve done some of the things that I’ve done and it wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for all the incredible humans, including my agents at Bloc Talent Agency and CESD, in my life that make it possible.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not, about a year into the journey my parents found out I had been living in LA without their knowledge and essentially punished me by cutting me off financially for a point in time which eventually led me to pursue photography as a way to bring in funds to support myself. During that time, I didn’t have a legal work permit so I had to improvise a bit. And in a general sense, the life of an artist in LA is never smooth one, plenty of rejections and plenty of ups and downs, but ultimately made ME who I am so I wouldn’t change a thing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Well, aside from dance, I’m an actor and vocalist. I grew up singing in church and theater. My aunt also introduced me to Opera, Motown, and the many game-changing artists that have made a huge impact on me not only as an artist but as a person. I’m proud of the work I’ve been able to be a part of and simply grateful to have done so with other incredible artists. I’ve also emulated the artists from the Golden Era of Hollywood such as Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Debbie Reynolds, and always dreamed of being able to do it all; I love music, I love acting, I love dance, I simply love art and want to explore all ways of expressing myself.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I used to be a competitive swimmer and play the Viola and Violin growing up.
