Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Matthew Goldberg
Lee Matthew, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m an author of mostly thrillers, but also have a Sci-fi novel and a Young Adult series. Working on adapting some of my books into scripts for film and TV. I’ve always wanted to be a writer since I was a little kid. Even back then, I veered toward mysteries and thrillers. David Lynch was a huge influence of mine. A film like Blue Velvet and a show like Twin Peaks showed the sinister beneath the beauty, so I’ve sought that out with my work too.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road. After graduating with an MFA, I worked to get an agent and then it was a few years before we sold my first book to an indie press. I published with a Big 5 publisher after that, but then went back to indie, so I’m looking to break at a Big 5 again. The book industry is very fickle and there is no sure thing. Oftentimes, you are writing a book on spec without knowing it will sell. A few of my books have been optioned before, but never made it to being greenlit, so working toward making that happen. I think to be a writer is to constantly struggle and learn how to have a thick skin.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
So, I primarily write what I’d call literary thrillers. They are plot-focused but all of them also have something to say. My writing is very visual and intended to be adapted for film and TV. Ultimately, that’s my goal. I’ve published 14 novels, and even the ones that aren’t standard thrillers, have thriller elements. I’m most interested in telling a good story that a reader can become lost in.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Being a writer is definitely a risky career. It’s peaks and valleys and there is no definite amount of money you’ll make in a year. But I thrive on risk too. I think it keeps me on my toes. It’s also the kind of work where any day you could get an email that changes your career dramatically. Since I’ve wanted it from an early age, there was never a chance I would do anything else. Rejection happens all the time, so you have to be like Teflon and learn to shrug it off. When there is an element of risk involved, I think it helps push your creativity so you don’t get complacent.
