Check Out Kyra Johnson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Johnson

Hi Kyra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Dance has always been my passion, a language I speak without words. From 3 years old it was a dream of mine to travel the world doing what I love. However, the journey has been anything but easy. In this post, My early years were filled with countless hours of training, where I learnt various styles and techniques. Entering the professional dance industry is both thrilling and daunting. Auditions can be fierce and rejection is a common part of the process. Networking is essential; I learned that relationships can often lead to unexpected opportunities. For aspiring dances, my advice is to stay true to your unique style and not be discouraged by setbacks. Each “no” brings you closer to a “yes” do the embrace the journey and keep pushing. Through this journey, I’ve not only developed my skills as a dancer but also grown tremendously as a person. Dance has taught me resilience and adaptability- qualities that extend beyond the studio. I’ve learnt to embrace challenges and see them as opportunities for growth. Each performance, whether successful or not, has contributed to my evolution as an artist. Chasing your dreams requires dedication, resilience, and a strong belief in yourself. No matter the obstacles, remember that every step you take brings you closer to your goals. I encourage you to embrace your journey and share your experiences. Let’s inspire one another to keep dancing and dreaming big.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not been easy since being a little Australian girl with not much opportunity! I took a chance on myself to follow my dream to get where I am today. Getting a visa was my biggest challenge/ still is. In Australia as a professional dancer there isn’t many opportunities to fully succeed in the career. Loads of Australians move or travel over the world to find the training/ work they need. Since my recent trip to LA it opened a huge variety of training for me. To Having world class choreographers teach every week at the dance studios you watch on social media, to the biggest conventions run in the world. I dreamt about this trip for years and I’ve finally taken the chance on myself to move and start my career properly. LA is where I am meant to be. It feels like home.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In my last trip to La I took part in Flip The Switch program. Ran by Alexander Chung & Jasmin Mason Chung. I got a email a few weeks after from Bloc La (One of the biggest agencies in LA) this honestly changed my life forever. I’ve now signed for 3 years to be a professional dancer.

By trade, I also own my own tattoo business back in Australia! I’ve always been artistic. I love the craft. I love creating. I started this business when I was just 18 years old. Since being a little girl I’ve always known I was going to do something that lets me use my talents. Fell in love with my business and so grateful with what I’ve achieved through it but knew my dance career always over powered.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My mum is my biggest mentor in every way possible! She is the biggest idol/ hero in my life. She was a single mother raising myself sister and I and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. She taught me how to be a boss lady for my business, to chase, to be patient, to be driven and simple love everything about life. She May not be a dancer but she pushes me to be the best version of myself. My 16 year old sister is my rock. She has pushed me to back myself since she was even born. (Sometimes I question if she is older than me) I look up to her in so many ways. She loves to dance too which makes me so happy as we can laugh and bicker and understand dance language at its finest. All my dance teachers over the past have pushed me to where I am today. I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t had great mentors.
