Today we’d like to introduce you to Korbin Brown
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started making films at 18 years old during the 2020 pandemic. It was one of the best decisions of my life. It shaped how far I’ve come and the things I’ve been able to achieve. In 5 years, I’ve come a long way from working out of my childhood bedroom.
I’ve made a plethora of short films and student films scattered all over the planet, and I can’t wait to show the world my latest film, HANDOFF.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A struggle that I’ve recently come across is identifying my artistic identity.
I’ve been so used to doing things myself at a slow and meticulous pace. I almost felt as though things were going too fast when I was allowed to delegate work. The film industry has so many people that do so many things, at such a high level.
I’m learning to let go of the control I once had as an amateur director for a much better product with a high production value. This has pushed my ability to communicate and tested the integrity of my artistic expression.
In my most recent film, HANDOFF, I sat down with my editor, and as we were exploring every option we had in the editing room, he looked at me after we did a test screening and he said, “There are too many cooks in the kitchen.”
Although I was begging for feedback and trying to get the best possible cut for audiences, he felt the integrity of the film was compromised. This is a collaborative medium, and nobody makes anything alone, but I had to sit back and ask myself how I was trying to tell this story. What kind of director was I?
My cuts were heavily influenced by the test audience’s reaction and interpretation of the film, and that’s not a bad thing, but that meant the film was more theirs than it was mine.
So we kept it simple; we went back to the drawing board, and we found the cut that suited my style of storytelling. Now, I’m really excited to show the world the project I’ve created.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Director. I’m known for telling Afro-Surrealist stories and cracking a joke or two here or there. I’m most proud of my upcoming film, HANDOFF. Everything in my storytelling career has led up to this point.
I think this film is what sets me apart. The time and dedication everyone gave, including myself. I think that’s what set me apart. I was able to infect each member of the crew with the love and care that I had for the film. I think oftentimes people just work on projects without any connection to the project. I feel so proud of this project because everybody in the film knew the underlying themes. They knew the goal I was trying to achieve and they knew the story I was trying to tell. From that point forward, each person was able to execute in their creativity and add something integral to the story’s development. This project is a testament to how well I captivated my cast and crew in development, to help bring this story to life.
Any big plans?
Right now I’m working on my next 2 short films, which I’m very excited about, as well as post-production for HANDOFF. The films are planned to be released in the late spring, so stay on the lookout.
From the spring moving forward, I’ll have to see what the summer holds.
