Check Out Kira’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira.

Hi Kira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion has always been about beauty and empowering people to feel their best. Initially, this led me to pursue a career as a makeup artist, and for nearly a decade, I honed my skills and gained invaluable experience in the industry.

However, my interests began to evolve, and I found myself increasingly drawn to the science behind skincare. In 2019, I obtained my esthetician’s license, which allowed me to deepen my understanding of skin health. Simultaneously, I began building my own lash business.

The pandemic, while challenging, became a pivotal point in my career. It provided me with the opportunity to immerse myself in the study of cosmetic chemistry and the intricacies of skincare. I dedicated myself to intensive learning, including advanced training with DMK International, where I earned a paramedical certification. This additional qualification expanded my ability to provide more advanced and transformative treatments.

This period marked a transition from makeup artistry to a dedicated focus on clinical skincare. I took a leap and opened my first business in a small salon in Chatsworth. Through dedication and client results, I was able to expand into my own private spa space within a medical office building in Tarzana, where I’ve been since last summer.

Now, I have the autonomy to create customized treatment plans for my clients, addressing their specific needs and concerns. I find immense satisfaction in my work, and I’ve cultivated a spa environment that feels like a second home.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My career has really taught me that success is never a linear journey. It’s constantly evolving, changing, and growing, hence the business name Evolutionary Skin. My path has been marked by unexpected turns that ultimately fueled my growth. For example, I was laid off from a dream HMUA job, and shortly after, my entire $8,000 hair and makeup kit was stolen. While devastating at the time, this forced me to re-evaluate my direction and recognize a deeper calling: to move beyond simply covering imperfections and instead, make a lasting difference in people’s skin health, confidence, and well-being.

This pattern of disruption and redirection continued. After my first salon arrangement, I moved into a shared space that proved to be unsustainable. When the location unexpectedly closed, I was once again compelled to swiftly adapt and establish my own independent space. Although challenging, this necessity became the catalyst for achieving a long-term goal I hadn’t yet known how or when to pursue.

These experiences have taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. More than that, they’ve reinforced my belief that even in the face of adversity, there’s a guiding force – whether you call it the universe or something else – that can steer you towards your true purpose. I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected, trust my journey, and remain open to the opportunities that emerge along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Evolutionary Skin, I’ve created a private spa environment where I offer a range of non-invasive facial and body treatments with a focus on rebuilding the skin from the inside out. I specialize in restoring skin function to achieve long-term results for my clients. My approach goes beyond temporary fixes; I focus on addressing the root causes of skin concerns to promote lasting change. I’m known for offering paramedical alternatives to more invasive procedures, providing effective solutions with less downtime, and for empowering my clients by providing them with a deep understanding of their specific skin conditions and how to effectively manage them. I address skin concerns with a holistic, science-based approach, creating customized treatment plans, and focusing on long-term goals. I’m incredibly proud of the results I achieve with my clients. Seeing their confidence and well-being transform as their skin health improves is the most rewarding aspect of my work. What sets me apart, I believe, is my commitment to personalized care, where I provide customized treatments with a licensed skin coach, ensuring each client receives a plan tailored to their unique needs. I also prioritize client education and empowerment, going beyond treatments to educate my clients, empowering them to take control of their skin health. I offer virtual consultations to provide personalized home care routines, making my expertise accessible to a wider audience. My focus is on long-term results, prioritizing sustainable skin health over quick fixes, fostering lasting improvements. Finally, I’ve created a space where clients can relax, feel at ease, and learn to understand their bodies. There are no employees or people walking in and out – it is just me, the client, and our goals, which gives another level of privacy. My dedication to the pursuit of skin health and vitality is what truly defines my work.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I view risk-taking as an inherent part of growth, and my career path reflects that. I wouldn’t describe myself as reckless, but I’m definitely not risk-averse. I believe calculated risks, taken with careful consideration and a willingness to adapt, are essential for progress. You know what they say – no risk, no reward.

One major risk I took was transitioning from a career as a makeup artist to the less certain world of skincare, and then striking out on my own. Leaving a familiar path, investing in new training, and opening my own business – twice – involved significant financial and emotional risks. Each time, I was stepping into the unknown, with no guarantee of success. For example, getting laid off my stable HMUA job and then having my entire kit stolen was a major setback that forced me to completely re-evaluate and change direction. Similarly, the closure of the shared salon space was a risk that pushed me to quickly establish my own space, something I wanted, but hadn’t planned for the timing.

These experiences taught me that risks often come with significant rewards. In both cases, the risks led me to where I am today: running a successful spa where I have full control over my practice and can make a real difference in my clients’ lives.

My perspective on risk is that it needs to be balanced with a clear vision and a strong work ethic. It’s not just about taking a leap of faith; it’s about being prepared to work hard to make that leap pay off. I also believe in learning from both successes and failures, and using those lessons to inform future decisions. So, while there’s always an element of uncertainty, I approach risk with a mindset of informed optimism and a commitment to making the most of whatever comes my way.
