Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimoy Lee.
Hi Kimoy , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be working as a professional voice actor, I probably would’ve laughed — not because it didn’t sound amazing, but because I didn’t even realize it was a real career path.
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, as a half-Black, half-Chinese kid, and was really a “tour baby” — traveling around the world thanks to my parents’ careers in music. Storytelling, performing, and soaking up different cultures were just a natural part of my life from early on. Still, like a lot of people, I thought “real jobs” had to look a certain way.
One day, I decided to just go for it and made my own at-home demo. I didn’t have a full plan — I just knew I loved using my voice to bring stories and characters to life. That homemade demo ended up leading me to CESD, and that’s how I officially got my start in the voiceover world.
That said, I definitely wouldn’t recommend doing it the way I did! I quickly learned that voice acting is one of the toughest forms of acting. It’s not just about having a “nice voice” — it’s about skill, technique, and serious stamina. Even now, as a working actor, I’m constantly taking classes and training to keep growing and staying sharp.
Voiceover has pushed me, challenged me, and made me fall even deeper in love with storytelling. And the best part? I’m just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road — but honestly, I don’t think it’s supposed to be. Voiceover can look easy from the outside, but it’s one of the most competitive and demanding forms of acting.
One of my biggest struggles early on was realizing that just having a “good voice” wasn’t enough. You need real technique, emotional range, stamina, and a deep understanding of the business side too. I also had to get really comfortable with rejection — because in this industry, you hear “no” way more often than “yes,” and you have to find a way to keep going without losing yourself.
Another big lesson for me was learning not to compare my path to anyone else’s. Growth looks different for everyone, and trusting my own timeline was (and still is) a challenge.
What’s helped me the most is surrounding myself with amazing people who push me to be better — people who inspire me every day as an actor and as a human being. People like Andrew Jones, Emily Ricks, Qalil Ismail, Dylan Chase Lee, Evan Smith, and Ry Chase. Having a circle that not only believes in you but challenges you to level up makes all the difference.
It’s been a road full of lessons, wins, setbacks, and comebacks — but I wouldn’t change it for anything.
Also Shout out to my amazing Agents at CESD !!! Erin, Brittany, Sam, Cathey, Beau and Cassidy
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
versatility, and heart — whether that’s for animation, video games, commercials, or narration. I’m known for having a wide emotional and vocal range, and for bringing a real sense of truth and connection to every performance.
I’m most proud of the projects I’m working on, like voicing Lil Kev on BET+ and Candy Apple Cookie in the game Cookie Run Kingdom. Being part of projects that connect with people and live in worlds I genuinely love is something I don’t take for granted.
What sets me apart is my ability to fully embody the story I’m telling. It’s not just about sounding good — it’s about making the character or the message feel real and alive.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that talent will open the door, but consistency, humility, and a willingness to keep learning is what keeps you in the room.
There’s always going to be someone with more experience, a different sound, or a different style — but staying focused on my own growth, taking classes, and showing up prepared has made all the difference. No matter how far you get, you have to stay a student of the craft. That mindset has kept me grounded and motivated through every high and low.
