Check Out Keilani Mai’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keilani Mai.

Keilani Mai

Hi Keilani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an American-Vietnamese singer born and raised in Southern California. From a young age, I’ve been captivated by music, writing my own songs and exploring three different instruments, mostly self-taught. While I had some formal music lessons early on, my journey took a unique turn.

Having graced stages across Orange County, LA, and San Diego, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my music with diverse audiences. In the initial phases of my career, I collaborated with the talented musician Matt Costa, shaping my early sound.

As a relatively new artist on the scene, this year marked the release of two singles, “Heartbreak” and “Prom Night.” Currently, I’m immersed in crafting an EP, eagerly embracing the creative process and evolving my musical identity. The journey so far has been a fusion of passion, self-discovery, and a deep love for the artistry that fuels my music.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating the path as an independent artist has been enriching yet challenging. Beyond crafting music, I’ve discovered the need to wear multiple hats—becoming my own social media manager, marketing expert, and project manager. Balancing these roles alongside my musical pursuits has been a learning curve.

As a woman and Vietnamese-American artist, the journey holds an added layer of complexity. Navigating the music industry while embracing my identity has been a constant evolution, shaping both my art and my understanding of the diverse landscape I operate within. Each challenge, though, fuels my determination to carve a unique space in the industry.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As Keilani Mai, my focus lies in crafting soulful and authentic music that reflects my American-Vietnamese heritage and Southern California roots. I specialize in blending diverse musical influences, drawing from my early formal training and self-taught mastery of three instruments. I’m known for my dynamic stage presence, having performed in various venues across Orange County, LA, and San Diego.

What I’m most proud of is my recent venture into the music scene as a new artist. Releasing singles like “Heartbreak” and “Prom Night” this year has been a significant milestone, and I’m currently immersed in the creation of an EP. What sets me apart is not just the music but the multifaceted journey I bring to it—being a woman, embracing my multiracial identity, and navigating the intricacies of being an independent artist. It’s a unique blend that shapes both my sound and my story.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My journey is woven with gratitude for those who have played pivotal roles in my success. My supportive mom has been a constant pillar, and my best friends, always showing up, are the heartbeat of my journey.

The Template in Ocean Beach, San Diego, deserves credit for bringing my music video vision to life this year. Huge appreciation to Ryan Fields, the mastermind behind the lens, for his exceptional work on the “Prom Night” music video. Eddie (@eddietastic) lent his talents to capture the essence of “Heartbreak” through stunning album cover photos.

Special thanks to my partner Harry for unwavering support. Matt Costa for believing in my potential, and Tom Massarany for his incredible talent and hard work producing both of my singles this year. Zach and Brandyn at Road Closed Studios have also been instrumental in shaping my sound. Each of these individuals has left an indelible mark on my artistic journey, and I’m grateful for their support, expertise, and belief in my music.
