Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylani Jones
Hi Kaylani, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started makeup because of my older sister she loved it so much she would always apply the most interesting color combos and have the most eye-catching looks and for her to be of a deeper complexion anything she would put on would pop out and stun, I caught on and started doing drag and I had asked her if she could do my makeup she did and I was just in love from there it made me feel bold and empowered my armor and the one thing that no one would be able to touch me in. As I grew older I elevated my makeup learning new techniques and trying new products my favorite brands are Blendbunny Cosmetics and Patmcgrath they always have such beautiful products. The more into my makeup I got I noticed that my clothing and makeup should match and represent me, fashion-wise I wanted to be as forward as my makeup looks. Hence, I began to adapt different styles of handbags shoes, and hair even to match me who knew years later that I’d be doing makeup on clients trying on different clothes from various companies and taking trips and photographing my makeup and clothing style in different states but also to do them as a trans woman living my truth the best way with no fear, my mother and my family has been the most inspiring pushing me to evolve and always telling me I can pull forward.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
To be honest this is not the smoothest road I mean brands are still not knocking down my door and yet they have so much money to support people who do the most minimal of looks and look like the same group of people. But when i enter the chat I am still not noticed and rather given less time I have learned to say whatever to it and let my creative looks and style show through and I still buy the products and show them how a black barbie can make it shine and doing it in my own way and making sure that i give the most honest and authentic review everytime.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup and fashion influencer what sets me apart from others is one i am trans two i do not let others tell me what they think i should be wearing but rather i listen to what my heart and my mind in unison tell me. I am very proud that I allowed myself to have so many bad fashion days because those days allowed me to get the person you see before you today especially my bad makeup days i have had so many but its those days that teach you what works for you and you begin to understand what works for you.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Stop looking at other people to be the standard of how you should look and how you should live your life, the best thing that you can do for yourself is make your life realistic and live to standards that you slowly create for yourself.
