Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Barrera.
Hi Karla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My history begins 20 years ago when I came from my Country El Salvador. I came to live in Sun Valley, CA. Trying to find a job when you don’t know the language it was pretty hard. I got very lucky to find an old friend who introduced me to the nanny World. I started working with a family as a nanny who spoke a little bit of Spanish, that made things a little bit easier. From that point, I pushed myself to learn English, and to be honest that’s where my life changed for the better.
I started to get educated in everything related to Babies. I felt at that point that I found the career that I loved. The road was not easy working live in as a nanny, and Saturday and Sunday going to school I didn’t had time for myself, it was like that for over four years. Now, when I look it back I have the satisfaction that it was worthy.
One of my dreams was to be one just like The professional Newborn Care Specialist that I admire so much which is Tonya Sakowicz. I’m grateful that all my hard work payoff and I’m not just become A Professional Newborn Care, I’m also a Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, and Lactation Educator. I feel proud of myself for all this accomplishment because 20 years ago, that like girl who didn’t spoke one word of English never thought she was going to make it in the big city.
Now I Run my own business, Intuitive Care, Postpartum, and Newborn Care Services I feel blessed to be able to help families during and after pregnancy, Teaching new parents everything about how to take care of their babies. I also teach Nannies Latinas who are looking for Nanny jobs, I help them to become Professionals and the field.
I’m grateful for the opportunity of this interview, also grateful for the families who trust me with their babies.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy coming from a 3rd world country, also not speaking English. I lost a lot of great job opportunities because I didn’t speak the language. Also, the time that I started my career, we didn’t had that many Latinas working as Newborn Care specialists, I was competing with the big ones.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Professional in Newborn Care. I take care Newborns right after they leave the hospital. I help moms with the Postpartum Care, help with Lactation.
Now I run my own business, Intuitive Care, Postpartum, and Newborn Care Services I feel blessed to be able to help families during and after pregnancy and teach new parents everything about how to take care of their babies.
Also, I offer closing the bones ceremony in Spanish is Cerrar de Caderas. And many more traditional services.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Yes! Never give up on your dream career. I know in the beginning it’s hard, but you need to find your own tribe who will help you to grow. Be humble and down to earth because that will help you to get to the finish line. Win-win.
