Today we’d like to introduce you to Kama Hagar.
Hi Kama, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up on the road with my dad’s rock band and learned from a very young age that to survive in this quick-paced life, I’d need to be extremely adaptable, vigilant and throw my needs out the window. Essentially, I learned to be small and easy. And with so many eyes on me so young, I learned to be very nice – to please – always trying to debunk the stereotype of being a rockstar’s daughter.
I was exposed to levels of success and fame most never get the chance to witness and it always left me wondering, “Why me? What is the spiritual meaning of this?” Those questions were unveiled in my time at my family’s house in the Hawaiian jungle – a place away from it all where we could simply be. We called it “Mu” named after the lost civilization of the pacific and the Zen Buddhist word for “nothingness” or a “peek behind the veil [between the earthly realm and enlightenment].”
What I realized over years of meditation, becoming a reiki master, and studying ancient Hawaiian healing with elders and healers – all those “peeks behind the veil” (in every way) were no coincidence. All of my studies and certifications were for me and my own healing – to come home to myself, but the greatest leap I ever took was to full-throttle decide to trust the pulls of my soul and truly surrender to it.
For me, that meant breaking my own habit of abandoning myself, leaving a relationship and my family behind, starting a new business and moving to Hawai’i. Within two months, my entire life was my vision board. I healed my chronic anxiety, met my soulmate, found my dream community, and made more money than I ever had. More than that though, I was truly living my authentic joy. I was finally me again.
The message? Your soul has your back. Over the past decade, I’ve coached all walks of life from teens to executives to celebrities to everyone in between remember that authenticity and bravery is the most magnetic energy to everything they’ve ever wanted, to trust their bodies as their personal thermostat, and to let joy be their compass to guide themselves home.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s such a compliment to me that people tell me, “you just radiate joy all the time,” but it hasn’t always been easy – at all. I struggled with chronic anxiety, codependency and attachment issues, eating disorders and body dysmorphia and severe trust issues.
For years I hated my body, ignored my needs and tried to find love and wholeness in others. I came to a breaking point after a particularly codependent relationship where I left my whole life behind to contort into his. It was the severe loss of myself that made me commit to never abandon myself like that ever again.
I healed it all through learning to listen to my body, being brave enough to claim my desires no matter how confusing, contrarian or disruptive they may be, to commit to following my joy even during the hard times, and to follow the pulls of my soul even when it feels nonsensical and terrifying. All of these steps are in my upcoming e-course Brave Enough to Be You launching 11/5/25 (www.kamahagar.com/brave-enough-to-be-you).
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a holistic entrepreneur, writer, and creative storyteller who builds brands and communities around healing, authenticity, and lit + luscious living. My work spans multiple worlds: I’m the founder of Mukama Botanica, an eco-luxury skincare line infused with Reiki and rooted in my upbringing in the Hawaiian jungle; the Editor-in-Chief of Maui Makai, a digital magazine curating the hottest, most soulful guide to Maui; and a soul health coach, speaker, and I guess, Youtuber (wtf!!) helping people come home to themselves.
What I’m most proud of is the way I’ve been able to turn my own healing journey into something that ripples outward. Everything I create—from skincare to stories to ceremonies—is infused with both edge and softness: a mix of spiritual depth, playful energy, and bold authenticity.
What sets me apart is the way I blend seemingly opposite worlds: silly rebellion with Hawaiian reverence, business strategy with soulful storytelling, groundedness with spirituality. I’m known for being radically authentic, deeply intuitive, and unafraid to show both my light and my shadow—because that’s where real healing and connection happen.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
BE YOUR MF SELF. Knock off the corporate voice. Knock off the over-professionalism. Be yourself. You will find the perfect person to match you, guide you and lead you because authenticity is the most magnetic frequency there is.
My mentors are female powerhouse community builders and entrepreneurs who swear their heads off, play like it’s their last day, and aren’t afraid to look like idiots trying something new.
