My creative journey began with a BFA in communications design, followed by work as an editor and compositor in Taipei. Seeking growth, I pursued graduate studies in New York, specializing in motion graphics.
Post-graduation, I engaged in diverse projects with clients like McDonald’s and Accenture. Active in the creative community, I’m a member of New York Alliance Drumlines and Brooklyn Wind Symphony.
My approach centers on a commitment to motion design, continuous learning, and collaborative problem-solving. Audience feedback shapes my style, and fellow artists inspire me. As a freelance motion designer in New York, I thrive on innovation and adaptability in the dynamic creative landscape.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Certainly! The journey hasn’t always been smooth. It started with the stroke of luck in landing my first freelance offer. However, with that opportunity came a series of considerations.
Firstly, there was the task of determining pricing—a delicate balance between market rates, the value of my skills, and client budgets. This financial aspect, while significant, was just the tip of the iceberg.
As I delved deeper into freelancing, the need to manage free time slots effectively became apparent. Juggling multiple projects and ensuring each received the attention it deserved posed its own set of challenges.
Simultaneously, maintaining the quality of my work became a priority. Balancing creative autonomy with meeting client expectations required finesse and adaptability.
Detail-oriented work extended beyond pricing to negotiating terms, outlining expectations, and specifying deliverables in contracts. Establishing clear communication channels and managing client expectations added another layer of complexity.
Now, I’ve evolved in my approach. I’ve become adept at calculating project costs, considering factors like pay rate per hour and adding extras based on the complexity of the project. This refined approach reflects not just financial acumen but a deeper understanding of the nuances involved in delivering successful freelance projects.
