Today we’d like to introduce you to Just Semaj.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started singing when I was in grade school, the first time I knew I could sing was at church. I come from a long line of singers, my mom is a singer, she got it from her mom who got singing from her mom. My dad’s side of the family are rappers. I guess I had no choice but to do something musically it’s in my DNA.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey, like any other one has been great. With a journey, we all know it comes with ups and downs. I have had people talk down on me and my gift. I have managers want to sign me to there magazines, but their motives were wrong. I audition for American idol, the voice. They both told me I didn’t have the look, they were looking for. I even auditioned for a show, the celebrity judges. The show creator looked me in the face and said, “I sing better than you and I smoke cigarettes”. Not gonna lie that hurt my feelings so bad, because I’ve never been told that I can’t sing. One thing I always knew about Just Semaj, is singing is what I do. If you put me in a room with singers, I’ll always hold my own. I say that because it’s more than just singing, it’s breaking generational curses for me and my future to come. One thing I’m glad that happened was that I was denied. I told myself if I don’t look like what they wanted, Im going to give them a new pair of lenses to look through. I have gone on to do so many things since then.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently working my E.P Blacklist , I am developing my own fragrance, I have gone on into acting. I’m a full-blown content creator. I’m an international streaming singer/songwriter also I’m one of the two hosts of a Facebook live show titled Wine,WEDNESDAYS, and conversations. I’ve also done script writing. I’ve produced in music and film.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is, going after what means the most to you and also conquering what you set out to do.
