Today we’d like to introduce you to Jun Lin
Jun, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! I’m a graphic designer from Taiwan based in Los Angeles. I’ve lived in LA for a little over seven years now. Visually, it’s a very exciting city to be in; there’s a good mix of cultures and aesthetics—I love the everyday things that are beautifully executed. The posters stapled to electric poles, the sunbleached store signs, the plaza signs using fifteen different fonts. There is a side to LA that feels ordinary and unpretentious and yet fun and experimental. People are just doing their own thing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a transplant LA’s car culture can make living here feel isolating at times. Things are so far apart, you really have to plan ahead to go anywhere, or maybe you end up being too lazy to drive. The pandemic just exacerbated this feeling of isolation. I’m trying to get out more, drive further and experience new things.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My design work spans a variety of mediums (brand, print, digital, illustration, packaging, etc). I’m most familiar with branding and print projects, but I enjoy designing magazines that will be flipped through over and over as much as I like editing together a short IG reel that will only get seen the week it’s posted.
As a designer one of my greatest responsibilities is to craft things with care. I love working with people to create meaningful products and experiences for others. In the past, I’ve helped shape & evolve cultural brands through a methodical approach, and a design sensibility informed by research and empathy.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I don’t have anything profound to say but AI is changing how people go about creative work. At the very least, I think it will speed up the research and sketching process; in turn designers will be encouraged to dig deeper, think farther, venture out of the box, and consider what it means to create work for human beings, at human scale—or for nonhuman species / the environment.
