Today we’d like to introduce you to Joce Sfetcu.
Hi Joce, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m currently an LA-based makeup artist and cosplayer. I have always had a passion for fantasy, action, horror films, and TV. I also loved books; I loved that these types of media could just transport you to their world. I’ve always loved the immersion. I knew immediately I wanted to create; I wanted to have a hand in making that escapist world for people. It was from my love of fiction that got me into cosplay. It was like my gateway into film makeup. Since early high school I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist, especially special effects. I was good at it, but I also had a passion to improve on it, I wanted to learn everything I could about makeup, whether it’d be application and products, or different styles of makeup. I, however, didn’t immediately go to makeup school. I first went to UC Irvine and studied criminology (which shockingly managed to be a related pivot from the horror movies that I loved), and after getting my bachelor’s degree, I moved on to trade school and got my certificate from Cinema Makeup School.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t. Wanting to be a makeup artist was not something my family approved of growing up. The whole reason I got a bachelor’s degree in the first place was because it was what they wanted and what they were willing to help me pay for. They wanted me to have a security net, and I don’t blame them for that at all, if anything I agree with them. Despite this, I knew it was still something I wanted to do. I worked every summer, then eventually worked full-time before even having finished my degree to save money for makeup school. I saved every penny, and when I had the money, I ended up going and getting my certificate on my own accord.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a makeup artist. I specialize in both beauty and special effects makeup and am studied in shop work as well. I’ve worked on a couple short films recently, and I really enjoy working on set. My favorite kind of makeup to do is more avant-garde; I love body paint and strong shapes and colors. I also love to create fantasy creatures with my makeup as well.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
This is an incredibly difficult question. The first that comes to mind is honestly one that I thought of recently. I remember going to my first convention. It was my first time in cosplay; I was like 12 or 13, I think? I was cosplaying Misty from Pokémon! I remember seeing all the merch and the community and just getting to meet people who had the same interests as me. It was also where I saw demonstrations of full body prosthetics being applied at a booth for special effects makeup. I just was completely enamored.
