Check Out Joanna Li’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Li

Hi Joanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Joanna, and I’m a Teochew Chinese Canadian illustrator, visual development artist, and character designer based in Los Angeles. Growing up, I was always drawn to storytelling—not just in books and films, but in the way people express themselves through culture, language, and everyday interactions. That fascination with human connection naturally led me to art, where I could explore personalities, emotions, and the small details that make people who they are.

I studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts, where I experimented with different styles and creative processes. While in school, I began working on freelance projects, designing packaging, patterns, and album covers. After graduating, I continued collaborating with musicians and brands.

At the core of my work is a deep curiosity about people. I love exploring how culture and personal history shape the way we think and act, and I bring that same thoughtfulness into my character design and illustrations. My goal is to create work that not only looks beautiful but also resonates with people on a personal level—stories and visuals that feel alive, evoke emotions, and celebrate the connections that make us human.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Sometimes I worry that my story isn’t original enough, especially with so many talented artists out there. But I’ve realized that the real goal isn’t to create the most unique work—it’s about connecting with people and making an impact. The struggles I’ve faced have taught me that growth comes from embracing imperfection and not being afraid to just create and share what matters to me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a visual development artist, illustrator, and character designer, and I specialize in creating characters and stories that feel alive. What I’m most passionate about is capturing the little moments and using lighting to evoke emotion. It’s those subtle touches—like the way light can change the mood of a scene or how a small expression can speak volumes—that really resonate with people.

I try to infuse my work with a personal, relatable quality, focusing on character backstories and emotions so that every design or illustration feels meaningful and heartfelt. What sets me apart is my attention to storytelling—not just in the big, sweeping moments, but in the quiet details that make a scene or character memorable.

I’m most proud of the recognition I’ve received for my work, like being shortlisted for Communication Arts, winning a 3×3 Merit Award, and being featured on the iJungle Illustration Awards. But what truly keeps me going is knowing that my work can connect with people.

What were you like growing up?
I was a shy kid growing up, often following others rather than leading. I loved reading—sometimes even textbooks—and I was always fascinated by the world around me. In elementary school, I spent a lot of time copying anime characters, drawing them on the blackboard and imagining new worlds. I’d get lost in my daydreams, often staring at the wind blowing through the curtains and wondering about different parallel worlds. It was those quiet moments that fueled my creativity and shaped the way I approach art today.
