Today we’d like to introduce you to James DeMoss.
Hi James, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a child, I was obsessed with artistic expression. Drawing and painting in various mediums were passions from a young age. However, life circumstances led me down a different path, and my art took a backseat to a career in education and science.
I rediscovered my love and desire for artistic expression at age 27 when I decided to put on makeup for the first time for an event I was attending. A single eyeshadow nervously bought from Sephora opened the door to an entirely new world with unlimited potential.
Doing makeup on myself transformed into makeup on friends, then clients, to ultimately makeup for brands and major campaigns. As a professional makeup artist, I have been able to showcase my art on many different canvases and have been internationally awarded for my artistry.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Growing up in a traditional household meant not being able to express myself authentically. I spent the majority of my life trying to fit myself into a puzzle I didn’t belong in. Allowing others to make decisions for my life and not following my purpose led to confusion and not following my dreams. Finally being true to myself allowed me to throw off the expectations of others and realize my potential as an artist and creative individual.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My personal art is best described as the intersectionality of masculinity and femininity. I enjoy creating looks that transcend or undermine traditional gender stereotypes. My commercial and editorial style combines skin-like natural touches with bold eyes or graphic liner. I have recently been awarded an International Beauty Industry Award for my skills in makeup artistry.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
A willingness to learn has been so important to my success. Every new opportunity is a chance to learn new skills or become more flexible and creative. As I’ve grown in my artistry, it’s important to know that there is a wealth of knowledge still available to me, so long as I am open to finding and receiving it.
