Check Out Jacob Sigman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Sigman.

Jacob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve loved music ever since I was a kid. In kindergarten, I used to sit in the book corner and sing show tunes and Beatles songs to my teacher all day long. That passion stayed with me throughout my childhood and I started writing and performing my own music early on. It was in college that I started to take things more seriously. I attended the University of Michigan and it was a very fertile creative environment. I was exposed to all different kinds of music and learned a lot about production and songcraft. After I graduated, I spent some years in Detroit. It was here that I learned how to produce my own music and where I wrote over 300 songs and recorded and released several of my own records. When 2020 hit, I spent a lot of time creating 30-second songs about anything from global warming to Pete Davidson’s love life and posting it on TikTok. This culminated with a live performance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon earlier this year. In the wake of the pandemic, I did something I’ve always wanted to try, living in Los Angeles. I’m hoping that my time here will inspire further artistic growth and be the Hollywood adventure I’ve heard so much about.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Music is a career of big highs and lows. The older I get, the harder it is to keep the original dream I had alive. The world looks different and you need to maintain faith that things will continue to grow if you apply yourself. I know all artists regardless of their commercial success struggle with doubts from time to time and I’m no different. I think it’s absolutely essential to remember why you do what you do. This was perhaps never more true than in 2020 when the future of the music industry looked extremely uncertain. Getting through that was hard but I think it reminded us all why music is such an important part of our culture.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a singer/songwriter/producer. I perform and produce my own music. What I’m most proud of is my songwriting. It’s a craft I’ve strived to hone for years and years now, writing hundreds of songs along the way. I think what sets me apart from others is my love for the classics and my sense of humor. I have a deep affinity for music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. This shapes the way I write and gives my music a classic feel that’s missing in a lot of music today. I also like to joke around and write songs about anything, serious or not. That’s what led me to start making meme songs and posting them on TikTok.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I really like the podcast hidden brain. It helps me to better understand my own habits and pitfalls from a more scientific perspective which helps me better understand myself.
